Here are some more pictures of the off-season progress on the car. We designed an adapter in solidworks which would allow the new blower to mount to the "old" manifold. Once we had it all laid out we used the 3d printer to make a "prototype" and mocked everything up. Made a few tweaks then loaded the program in the CNC machine and made the final parts.

As part of the MASSIVE weight "program" for the winter...I went away from the belt driver PS pump to the Toyota MR2 electric pump in the trunk. With the new control arms, ABS brick relocation, PS and a few other projects we will have moved almost 50lbs off the nose of the car. That 50lbs along with a few other LBS we have removed with the seats and a few other projects....we will have a total of 70lbs of new weight in the trunk...That was MUCH needed as the F/R bias of the car last year was like 57/43

And just as a teaser.......here is one of the new seats on the digital scale :)

Required to run a full-size seat on both sides, or can you cut the passenger side down?

aidandj 02-06-2016 01:01 PM

What's the min weight?

When does the BP get thrown out. That's great ta be a big chunk of nose weight.

sixshooter 02-06-2016 03:21 PM

Are you using the super lightweight control arms V8R has just come out with? They aren't on their website except for a placeholder but I think they are aluminum and the name is X-treme or something? Being on the bleeding edge I figured you would have them.

They are supposed to be here in a couple weeks. They are supposed to save 12 lbs off the nose. They don't have the aluminum ones for the rear yet but I will be using their "pro series" rears

2057lbs is my min. And I'm not getting rid of the BP.

Yea. We have to run a full size, fully upholstered seat on both sides.

Time to bust out the spray glue and an old bed sheet to meet the upholstery rule.

Annnnd there is the Power Steering pump mounted. That was an easier project than I thought it was going to be.

Bronson M 02-07-2016 10:18 AM

Was the electric PS pump a net weight savings or a f/r balance improvement?

Yes

The MR2 pump is under 6 pounds? I know the volvo pump isnt, heck the hydraulic hose front to back is like 5 pounds once you put ps fluid in it. I know I did mine just for getting weight off the nose and because my huge turbo was in the way of the stock one.

TNTUBA 02-07-2016 01:45 PM

By the time you factor in the weight of the pump, the bracket, the fasteners, the PS cooler and the stock lines. Yes it is. The 10' braided SS line is actually lighter than the 2ft long stock hose.

patsmx5 02-07-2016 03:13 PM

Eric, I'm sure you have numbers. What's the weight of each system with fluid? As mentioned you have longer lines, so they might hold more fluid weight than the factory lines?

TNTUBA 02-12-2016 07:00 AM

First diagnostic checks of Power steering pump, relocated ABS and re wired fans, ignition harness and fuel pumps worked flawlessly.

Pretty stoked I don't have to spend weeks going back through all that mess.

Is that a soft blow hammer?

I see something in one of those pics that I despised the last time I built an engine (way over ten years ago). Manual ring filer, I still fucking hate you!

Twibs415 02-14-2016 12:38 PM

who did you have coat the pistons?

TNTUBA 02-14-2016 03:53 PM

There is a STRONG hint who did it in a couple of the pictures.

Twibs415 02-14-2016 03:59 PM

:likecat: just checking

How does their price and turn around compare to swaintech? I've got a bunch of things that will get coated this year.

TNTUBA 02-14-2016 05:47 PM

I really can't compare them to Swain tech as I have never used Swain Tech. But I met the guys from Calico at PRI and was very impressed.

If you are interested, call their office and ask for Brad. He will work you up a quote. I had a TON of stuff coated, valves, wrist pins, 2 sets of bearings, pistons, etc etc etc. So it's hard to remember what each part was...I just remember the total.

Turn around on every thing other than the DLC coating was just 2 or 3 days. The DLC is about 14 days.
