Fender rolling is easy

So this is a quick comment. In preparation for some 15x9 6ULs I rolled the fenders last night on the NA track Miata using a fender roller tool (rented from rlogan) and a heat gun. This is the first time I have rolled the fenders on anything. It took just over an hour to roll all four. No cracked paint, and it looks fine.

One bit of advice... Take the upper screws off of the front fender liner BEFORE you roll the fender

No pictures yet but they are not really needed since it looks the same as most any other rolled Miata fenders.

So, if you have maybe been hesitant to roll yours, get a fender roller tool (the kind that attaches to the hub), a heat gun, and go for it.

I rolled mine a long time ago (only the rears though, the fronts didn't rub), what I'm mored interested in is where did you get the roller?

HF used to carry them but stopped, and most other places want an arm and a leg for em.

I bought the one he used off of ebay...I think it had been used once. It was the tire rack model and it was around or less than $200 shipped with heat gun.

Here is the least expensive one out right now. $150

I used a double dong and a syringe I dug out of the dumpster to roll my fenders.

rlogan 04-08-2011 10:49 AM

Man, that double dong must have had some girth and rigidity...was it prelubed?

Machismo 04-08-2011 10:49 AM

Better story than my wooden bat I used... :giggle:

ZX-Tex 04-08-2011 10:49 AM

Rlogan bought it from somewhere, I forget where. It was not cheap, about $200+ IIRC. But if it lets me get it done in an hour (instead of four) with good results (and not crappy looking) it is worth it.

It looks exactly like this one. Exactly.

Well actually I did use my schlong, from the bedroom, using a fluffer (from the harem pool) to keep it up, wearing two condoms (large trashbags) to prevent scratches. Viagra works too from what I hear, but the fluffer is more fun.

drift store "poweredbymax" sells them meant specifically for lowered cars.... it is adjustable for the non-lowered variety too though.

iirc roller is about the same if not less than the HF one. @ ~220$

I bet this would work better than the bat trick, which is great on the top of the tire, but towards the edges the fender starts getting further away. Doesn't matter much since the rear wheel doesn't move forward and backwards, but it looks uneven.

I know some forums have one or two guys (rlogan) that charge $40 to ship you their roller, then in a few weeks you ship it back. It's not really one of the rentable tools at autozone. I might rent it, along with someone's scales. That'd be nice.

cueball1 04-08-2011 01:24 PM

Let me know if you find some scales to rent! I'd be in for a NW MT.net corner balance day. Bet a couple of the CR kids would chip in too.

Indeed it does. Had I used the roller I wouldn't have had to spend way too much time with the wheels off and carefully metal working the rest of the edges. Details like that bug me, so I had to go the all or nothing route.

our car club bought one (eastwood) but i didn't want to mess around so i just cut the lips right off with a jigsaw with the correct blade. it was so easy with the right blade, it went thru that shit like butter, took under 5 mins. per fender and i just used some primer with a little brush for rust protection.

the other guys i've seen roll their fenders took 4-5 hours! but they weren't miata's, maybe miata's are easier to roll.

Machismo 04-08-2011 02:25 PM

They are only difficult if user works too fast and ends up doing more pulling than actual rolling. The fronts I trimmed as well... ;) Learned my lesson from the rears.

Maybe you can show that to us at the next race. Will it fit in your trailer?

Volume wise, but it will exceed the weight limit of the trailer.

Ryan does rent out his roller. We are talking about bringing it to the next NASA race so it is available.

Also, this is very preliminary, but we were discussing at lunch about how we could rent out the scales at the track. Maybe set up on a level surface somewhere and charge by the hour, with a minimum. Would the Texas crew be interested in that assuming the price is reasonable? We need to clear this with the other two owners of the scales before it is a go. If it is a go I will start another thread.

spoolin2bars 04-08-2011 02:50 PM

the so. texas crew pitched in on a set of our own. thanks though, that's a good idea!

AACHH!! Don't go renting your scales at the track!
