just did the rear brakes for the first time and the four clips seem pretty pointless. I did not really examine the brakes with/without, I just put them back on but I was curious if anyone runs with out them. they seem kinda pointless since the pads cant fall out. are they just for reducing noise?

The pads will rattle around without the springs. Dunno about the clips, it's easy enough to use them, so why not. But I lost my springs for a few days and they have their purpose. It was enough noise to be annoying for a DD.

I never have luck with the springs in the rear. I had the clips fall off on one side, it was extremely noisey, sounded like it was falling apart at low speeds lol. No issues with the anti-rattle clips in place.

this thread reminds me i need a new rear driver side bracket from my brakes.
i swapped pads over the weekend and could barely get the caliper to swing out...the slider pin looks bent so the caliper doesn't freely move.
someone send me one.

Cobalt Friction pads changed the dimensions of the backing plate so they work without the clips fitting tighter to the caliper brackets without clips and don't actually fit with them. Makes changing pads a lot faster. I run the clips with other pads but have had no problems running without them with Cobalt pads. Haven’t messed with the springs in many years.

Brain, if you can confirm that the early brakes are the same as 1994, I've got a brand new pin sitting on the shelf I can mail to you.
Looks just like this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MAZDA-MX5-...05%26rk%3D1%26
From what I've found, it's th same for all years. PM me your address.
