My ACT Extreme has held up fine for 3 years but will be getting replaced when I do the pilot bearing. Making some noise now and NO it is not the T/O bearing. That was replaced last season when 5-speed replacement went in.
The heavy pedal was soon forgotten as I got used to it and almost hated driving stock Miatas after that.
I have always hated the low engagement however.
The low engagement was fine on mine as I adjusted it some to accommodate for it. Worked fine while I had carpet, but better when carpet was removed.
I will not get another as there are better products on the market now.

Is John's clutch an organic single? I remember trying the organic single in Emilio's ex-rental 99 and it was much nicer than my cerametallic twin.

Im running the ACT EX with organic disc, I originally bought it because I drove the car on the street and the track, then it turned into a track only car and I have had no problems, I plan on at least changing the disc for a puck type for some good head room but the one I have has shown that the NT01s will slip before it will, even at +100mph in 5th. So I just purchased the 1.8L F1 flywheel from 949.

Now here is a question. I obviously want to have the pressure plate balanced to the flywheel. When doing so, I would presume that the disk stays out? Since depending on where teh clutch takes up, the disk will always be in a different location?

So balancing... just the flywheel and the PPlate?

That is correct, also make sure you index the PP to the flywheel the same way the machine shop does, some only go on one way but its always good to have them mark it anyways.

Add me to that list, but I have the FM 1.

+1. Balance the flywheel and pressure plate only. Have them index the flywheel to the pressure plate. In my case the machine shop made three small punch marks on both where they align. Punch marks will not come off, paint can.

I'm in the market for a new clutch and flywheel.

I'm just going to go with an Exedy OEM replacement since my engine is going to be stock minus Racing Beat's 4-1 header. The question is what flywheel to use. I'm going to be doing a fair bit of track days this year and I want something lighter than the 23lbs stock one.

I know that F1 is some sketchy Chinese made stuff, but I think that the Fidanza is too expensive. Anybody have luck with the 10lbs FM LWFW?

What does FM have to say about it, and do you have the old or new flywheel? The FM clutch in Jeffman's 99 is great.

I have the old style 9lb flywheel which is actually a Fidanza flywheel.

It's great. Revs like a sportscar should.

I have the ACT 6puck with the XT pressure plate. I believe it might be Sav's old clutch. I bought it from underrated, he never got around to installing it.

I also have the fidanza 10lb flywheel.

I have no complaints with either of them. I daily drive it and the only time its a pain is when I'm stuck in freeway traffic that is stop and go for miles. If i can just let the car idle in 1st or 2nd and cruise at 5-10mph its fine. The clutch is fairly easy to modulate once you get used to it because it doesn't seem to heat up that much and get super grippy unless you push it.

I just went from a 13.5lb to a 15.5lb. I was very surprised by the difference that 2 lbs can make. I like the heavier flywheel for the street. The 13.5lb was much more zippy. (if that makes sense). The 15.5 lb is nicer witht he 6 puck. I can't imagine the 6-puck, XT pp, and a 9 lb flywheel. FYI I have the XT pp/sprung 6-puck and i like it.

*****. While you may be a Doctor and a Physicist, I am a Doctor and a Lawyer and thanks to my specialized legal training I know how to properly utilize my 9lb flywheel and, XT pp, and 6 puck sprung disc. I would rather slit my wrists than drive in stop and go traffic with it. In fact, the last time I drove it in stop and go traffic, I ruptured the damn factory rubber clutch line with the brutal, precise, and refined power of my buttocks.

Anybody know the weight difference between sprung and unsprung hubs on the 1.6l disks?

Spring hubs are usually around .9 lb heavier than rigid
1.6 organic rigid I usually use is 1.3lbs IIRC.

ACT does not heat treat their diaphragm springs because that would cost more. To get any clamping pressure they have to use a thick diaphragm that has a different spring rate curve than a thinner (and lighter) heat treated spring. That is why when you install an ACT, full disengage is near the floor and the pedal is relatively heavy for the torque capacity. It can be compensated for by adjusting the pedal height or removing the clutch and tossing it in the trash.

When you see a clutch that has a much lighter pedal, higher engagement point and the same torque capacity, it will usually be a heat treated diaphragm.

We're developing a line of OEM style high performance/ high capacity replacement clutches with several nice features, including heat treated diaphragms. Probably end of the year before they reach production though as I haven't had time to complete all the testing.

?
The sprung hub disk is lighter? Or was that a miss type of 1.9 and so the sprung center only adds .5 pounds? Or is it that the sprung center adds .9 lbs?

In any case it doesn’t seem to be that much weight for the sprung center.

I wonder how livable a 4 puck would be? My 1.6l extreme sprung 6 puck on a 7 lb Fadanza flywheel is quite drivable even in traffic and it is holding more than 300 ft-lbs of torque. I've thought about going to an un-sprung or maybe even 4 puck to remove weight any where I can.
