T1 on this track is 130mph on the GPS (incidated 140) and is an actual 'turn' unlike T1 at Pacific Raceways or Laguna. T2 arrives very quickly (also unlike those tracks) and you need to scrub another 70mph or so to make that turn in. If the car is out of shape from heroics coming out of T1, you will have nowhere to shut down for T2 and barrel roll up the hill into the trees.

I'm simply not comfortable enough with my driving skills or the car yet to take it flat. I try not to act like a baller and pretend there aren't a few dozen guys on this board alone faster than me.

And on the a COT wing note, I completely redid my front aero to balance the rear wing, and am still working on more revisions/additions for the front to achieve that balance because the wing is doing so much. There's a lot going on with the car aerodynamically of course, but the COT airfoil is a significant element.

Just set a new class record this past weekend at Buttonwillow 13CW and am the first miata to ever break the 2:00 barrier on street tires.

The COT wing and FM mounts were pretty easy to install to the 2000 miata. The End-plates that came with the wing were obviously intended for a steep AOA/ close to body mounting position. so i decided to make some end-plates of my own that (theoretically) should be better suited to my application.

The first set here i created with the intent of being useful at autox speeds.


The second set here are designed to be within the size limitation designated by NASA (12" end-plate height maximum). Sorry they are difficult to see in unpainted plexiglass.


The third picture here shows how great the FM mounts are at being removable for DD use.


They are very easy to mount and remove since i used a riv-nut mounting method and flush mount screws.



I have yet to do much testing other than string testing at steady 70mph on the highway. I will be doing an autox this weekend and will see if these actually make a significant difference at <70mph speeds.

Love the invisible end plates.

My first test was done on a track with an average speed of 50 mph and a peak of about 75, and I took off two seconds with just the wing. So yeah, they'll work at lower speeds.

Love the mounts! They only needed minor tweaking with a drill and a little paint to make them perfect. You guys had great timing and follow through in getting these out to us. Cheers!

I am pretty excited to see what sort of difference i can expect. This is also just one more variable that i can tweak in the pursuit of fast laps. Have you found at roughly what AOA (relative to ground level) you are seeing stall with this mount configuration?

What grade of aluminum and what thickness are you guys using for your mounts that mount to the inside of the trunk. Similar to Flyin Miatas.

I have a GTC-200 that I am making custom mounts for but not sure what to use.

I used flat 6"x1/4" plate and my mounts are very solid. Keith is probably using thinner stuff, since those bends will add a ton of strength.

I was not able to see any real benefit to this wing at our local autox event. I wont be using it for anything other than track days from now on.

Speaking of which... i have one coming up this weekend at Summit Point main circuit. I am sure that i will see a huge difference there with an average speed in the 80mph range.

The FM ones are 1/8" 5052 aluminum.

I made a second set with the wing about 4-5" higher, and it had a bit more flex than I liked - I could see what the failure mode would be under a high drag load. I added a couple of wires and it got very solid. I'll get pics later today.

Wow, mine are milled down to 0.20 6061 t6 and I had to add side supports because it wobbled back and forth over 55. Though my wing is a bit lighter, less symmetric, and provides a less stiff connection between the two wing mounts.

Oh wow I wouldn't have thought they were that thin. My friends NSX uses 3/16 titanium, but his wing is only 9" off the deck.

The wing certainly helps with lateral strength. It's solidly bolted to the mounts, closing the box. If there were turnbuckles in there, it would be a very different story.
