So I'm considering trying to fit fiberglass sparco seat that doesn't fit perfectly without mods. I've considered and done some hammering ( looks like may need cutting into trans. tunnel for the best effect), but it seems that I may be able to get enough clearance for the seat if I shave off the C curve on the seat edge (where the cover is wrapped around and held in place by wire/glue). Those curved edges are about 1" each, so I'm thinking of shaving off one on the thigh support on the right (by trans. tunnel) and on the the wing where it touches the door. Plan would be to leave a small curve enough to hold fabric, but not as nearly pronounced as it is now.
Would that be a bad idea or really terrible one? |

I cheaped out as they were pretty low priced but honestly, go buy good rails. There's absolutely no clearance on the back bolt (see pic) on the rear of the seat which attaches it to the floorpan, it was an absolute pain trying to torque it down. Dreading having to take the seat off, but when I do I'm going to fab up a bracket to get them onto the stock rails, I'm not tall enough for the extra seat height to be a problem. I knew I wanted to use these seats even though there would be easier options because they fit me really well. I am just barely over 6' tall and 175lbs. It was a nightmare to get the seats to fit low enough for me to pass the broomstick test. Lots and lots of hammering the floor and trans tunnel. My car has a Harddog double diagonal rollbar for reference. If I could do it again I would skip the hammering and just weld in some floor pan lowering plates. That would have been easier and safer. |
I bought the track dog racing kit that came with the ultra low mount. I cannot even begin to describe how good this setup is. I'm a big dude 230 lbs 5'9

Lotus Elise Seats
Not a track seat but for a street car these are great. I needed a seat that fit, got me low, provided lateral support but didn't have a bolster that made getting in and out of the car a pain. I originally had the Flipside rails on both seats that used the stock slider but switched the driver side over to the Luso Motor rails because it got me lower and allows me to set the tilt of the seat. These seats are pretty hardcore and they lack comfort but they make up for that with the driving position they offer. Still using the Flipside rails on the passenger for easy access to my ecu. The fixed Luso Rail's make taking the seat in and out a real pain. I also carry a small memory foam pillow for lumbar support, it makes a world of difference on long drives.

Last month my mother visited and while she loved driving my 2001 Miata, she didn't like my modified Mazdaspeed with Elise seats. I'm 6'3", 180 lbs. but long torso. I'm using a similar set of brackets (chance design?) on OEM sliders. My head is slightly above both the seat and roll bar (I have the same Boss Frog bar). It looks like these brackets might get me close to being below the bar. I have the matching OEM hardtop but even with a seat drop pan I don't think I'd pass the broomstick test. As for comfort, I have a set of first generation seats with lumbar bladders that came in the car as well as a set of Probax seats that I bought for my previous Miata. The Probax are a little less comfortable for me, I'd rather have the lumbar bladder. I was going to replace the worn out foam and customize it to fit. I bought a roll of 1/2" green upholstery foam and placed an order for that special, ballistic type foam that the Lotus owners use (doesn't bottom out) but gave up in early 2020. After about three weeks of the product not shipping I called. They said they'd get back to me with a time estimate but after a few more weeks with no update I disputed the charge. |
