Coming from previous evo, C5Z06 and S2000 as track day cars. Looking for track day tires and sizes best suited to my setup. 215 or 225 on 8 inch wheel for this car? Will 225/45 kill gearing? Am I over analyzing? NT01 and Hankook TD Z221 hard are on the short list. Any input is greatly appreciated. Details of the car listed below.

205 on an 8 inch rim. 225 on a 9 inch rim 245 on a 10 inch rim for the racetrack. at least for NAs and NBs...

 

17x9 w/ 245/40-17 seems pretty popular. That's what I went with on our '13 Club, RPF1s and Re71Rs, to be specific.



Ours is a PRHT, so more of a 'casual' track car. NT-01s aren't available in 245, just 235 or 255.

IIRC, some of the more serious autoxers are running 255s on a 10" wheel.

 

You could do 235/40's as well. Then, when you get serious, 17x10 6UL's and 255/40's

 

I wasn't clear if OP already had 17x8 wheels, or that was what was planned... 235s will work on 8s, but they'll be pretty wide, especially something like an NT01.

I tried a 215/45 on our 17x8s last year (Kumho V720) and wanted more tire.

 

Sorry for being a bit unclear on the wheel size. When I picked up the car the previous owner had put 17x8 +45 Motegi MR118 wheels on the car. I'm going to run them and also try to find a deal on some 17x9 RPF1's. Thanks for all the info.

Just run 235's on the 17x8's for now and save up for 17x10's and 255's. You are giving up maximum grip.

 

So the next choice over your previously tried 215's are 225's. Those are definitely an option, but I have seen Brian Goodwin use 235's multiple times on his 17x8 setups and he seemed to like them.

 

225/45-17 has the advantage of lots of choices, but it's 3/4" taller than stock, which will affect gearing and acceleration, and some have reported rubbing at lower ride heights. 235/40-17 is stock height, and 245/40-17 is ~ 1/2" taller than stock.

I went straight to 245s on 9s for the track, but will likely be replacing the current street tire with 235s (on 8s). It would be nice if there was more choice in the 235 size...
