OG racing Doesn't sell windshields. But we do have many friends in the industry. Five star race car bodies has released a very promising windshield that might be of some interest to many track going members here

that's fine as long as you upgrade your helmet. when the car in front of you leaves a connecting rod on the track, you'll need something to catch it.

IL- you need to keep the OEM glass.

I.e. Getting Miata windshilds made by them is not big task, but a GB (and some work) would probably be needed to get the price down close to their stocked level ($450 ?).

got to get the universal one (or any window they offer will be over sized) and cut it. it's not going to be a cheap option btw. I'm sure it's the i want a lightweight lexan window and i don't want to catch a starter in the face option. If we send them emails and express interest i'm sure they will produce miata windshields.

Emilio turned me onto these guys a few years ago. They have a pre-cut Miata-specific shield that fits perfectly. 3/16", OEM fitment, $434+ship. Glue it in with Silicone RTV just like the stock glass, clean it with soap-based cleaners and a soft cloth. 11lbs lighter than stock glass (9lb vs 20lb). The shipping costs make it hard for me to actually make money on them, so I don't stock them, but I have done group buys for CA guys before. It's something I would do again with enough interest.

 

No additional supports across the windshield needed?

 

I don't see the ROI of the 'special windshield'.

I had the guy at the local shop come to my house and install a new windshield for $125, leaving me more money for tires.

 

It would appear that the ROI = eleven pounds off the top. Combine that with a lightweight hardtop (with a similar Plexiglas/Lexan rear window) and you could have many much pound reduction off the highest point of the car.

Just sayin', with no charts or graphs.

 

Since we're talking about windshields. I heard that the really really cheap chinese OEM replacements are ~6lbs lighter than stock. Has anyone tested this? And is it all distorted as ****? I have to have OEM glass in my class, and my windshield is getting all pitted and shity and has a small crack.

 

Nope. No wind buffeting at sane speeds (<160mph), no indication that it's anything other than glass unless you get up close or tap on it. Apparently the 3/16" version starts to buffet a little at ~200mph, so Racing Shields sells a 1/4" version as well.

The ROI is 11lbs of weight reduction above the beltline of the car. If that doesn't interest you, the $125 glass will do you just fine.

My current upgrade project is to remove 11 (x10) lbs. from between the steering wheel and the back of the seat; at the beltline, mine.

 

Poly screens are technically race only, as true street windscreens require DOT/ANSI certified safety glass. There are a couple of states that don't require windshields, BUT if you have a windshield then you also are required to have wipers. And defrost. However much of this is up to the interpretation of your local constabulary. Side and rear windows are open season for non-glass.
