Having that rack on the back would compromise my ability to transport large things by setting them onto a blanket and then securing them with nylon ratchet-straps run between the rear tiedown points and the behind-the-seats bar.

That is really, seriously screwing with my brain. I've never had a very good intuitive sense of multidimensional spatial perception, and that's just breaking me.
I mean, logically it makes sense. There is no "inner space" behind the portals, they merely reflect one surface onto another. So the stick man is going to be crushed by himself.
The part of my brain that allows me to visualize such things, however, rejects this.
