Default 1990 Eunos Build

Whats up everyone? Finally got out of the Mitsubishi game (had multiple Starions/Chrysler Conquests) and bought my 90 Eunos about a year ago. BRG color, only 61k on the odometer. Completely stock. Put down 95.5 hp at the wheels on a dyno. Ran a whole season of RallyX with it too. I placed 3rd in my class for Mod Rear Wheel drive. Started in Stock Rear but as I did mods it pushed me higher up the classes.

Anyways first thing I did was hook up my spare Haltech ECU and remove the factory AFM and tune it a little. It is a Sprint 500 ECU which was simple to get dialed in. Removing the AFM was a big improvement. After that a turbo 1.6 92 came up for sale near me. I ended up buying that for cheap and plan on ripping that engine out to build. Having spare parts is a plus, it also came with a torsen diff swap!

Since I got the cheap turbo car I wanted to get a little more N/A power from the Eunos while I wait to tear down the other. Picked up a Manzo exhaust and header as well as a T3 test pipe. Stupid loud and I'm sure my neighbors hate me. I also picked up a cold air intake setup. I figured what the hell, why not see what it makes. Still haven't gone back to the dyno yet, but my guess is probably 110-115. Threw on a HDHCDD roll bar for safety and when a local junk yard was having a memorial day sale, I snagged a strut tower bar from an MB for 12 bucks.

Now the turbo car is just a bone stock 1.6 with a turbo kit I think is from MKTurbo. Either way I'm throwing some better rods and pistons in there as well as head work. I bought some 640cc injectors and have a AEM pump to throw in. My goal is about 200-250hp reliably. If it can do more I may push it but I want this to be a solid fun car I can take to track days here and there while at the same time being able to drive back and forth to work in. I also own a B16 swapped CRX. I traded one of my Starions for it as no one would buy it because they didn't know what it was.

I look forward to interacting with everyone on here. I'm a master GM technician for a Buick/GMC dealer if anyone needs automotive help or LS engine specific information. As I do more stuff to the car I'll update the post.

I am pretty sure I've seen you driving around Goose Creek and talked to you once or twice.

Don't sink a single penny into building a 1.6 motor. Costs are exactly the same as building a 1.8 motor and you will come out far ahead with powrt under the curve from the extra displacement.

Are you the guy with the Purple NA with a tan top that hit their pop ups at me on Sunday right at the tracks on N.A.D. road? I debated a 1.8 swap and aside from having all the turbo components I would just need a manifold for a 1.8, I dunno though. I see 1.8s for sale and cant bring myself to pull the trigger. The benefit of having the 1.6 is that I already have two of them that both run. In any case let me know if you wanna meet up sometime. I go to C&C once a month or so. If you come across any cheap 94/95 1.8 long blocks I may consider a swap.

I'm generally riding around in my bright green Mazda2. If I am in a miata its a black NA with a red interior. Ill have a vvt head and bottom end for sale sometime in the near future. Tomorrow when I get on my comp ill post the dyno why you want the 1.8 motor. The extra $500-$700 up front is a drop in the bucket long term.

This is why you want a 1.8 motor. All the area under the curve.

Which version 1.8 is that in comparison to? I read the 94/95 blocks are easier to turbo seeing as how they supposedly have the plug on the left side of the block already tapped for the oil feed. I would prefer not to have to run a line all the way from one side of the engine up and over to the turbo.

So a $40 line that takes all of 5 extra minutes to plumb is a big problem for you?
The above plot isn't even the "good" 1.8

It isn't a problem, I just prefer to not have it that way. If I chose to do the swap I would run a hard line on the firewall and two soft braided hoses. One to the oil pressure sensor T and the other to the turbo. Soft lines fail eventually, I would rather have a smaller hard line to replace that would only leak oil on one side of the engine versus a giant feed line that could burst and cause my whole engine bay to get covered in oil.

Like I said I wasnt dismissing the swap or said it was a problem. Just prefer not to do one giant hose.

Often times theoretical "logic" contradicts reality. But it's ok. I'm sure you'll catch on with time. There's a reason why we all tend to do things similarly on here

I get what you're saying but I think you're missing what I am saying. The one main reason I haven't swapped it is because I haven't found a good reliable 1.8 for sale at a good price. Literally the people in my area tax the **** out of them. I bought the turbo 1.6 car simply because it gave me spare parts, some upgrade parts, and was dirt cheap. I'm gonna run what I'm going to run. If I dont like the results then I'll decide what to do from there. Either way thanks for being very welcoming to the forum.

I do get what you're saying, which is why I've been so nice to you. (yes this is me being extremely nice)
If I were you, I'd invest minimum money into it, beat on it like it owes you money, and be on the lookout for a 1.8

Well buddy I took your advice and believe it or not a 99 Miata came up for sale in my city this morning. Guy wanted 1500 and it is a 1.8 with a turbo on it lol. Just got done with the purchase so now I will sell off my 1.6 stuff to recoup the funds I just spent. More to come soon.

It isnt anything crazy. It looks like something out of 2 Fast 2 Furious. Has a cracked carbon fiber hood and body kit. The turbo is blown. I checked the shaft play and it has a good deal of it. The guy said he bought the turbo locally but didn't give me more information than that. He did rebuilt the motor but as to how well I'm not sure. There is a water leak on the passenger side of the head. He said he didn't have it decked. I'm going to pull it and do a complete teardown.

I also didn't realize you're the guy who does MKTurbo. I remember exactly who you are now. I saw you on St. James shortly after I bought my car. I'll need to get some of the oil feed lines you make as well as some other stuff.
