Hi Everyone,

I found a small hairline crack/leak on my turbo manifold. I think it's thermal-expansion related, and not a structual related crack.

I'll take some pictures when I get home tonight, but it sorta looks like this. I have a cast-iron manifold that looks to be the same design as begi or FM. I can't tell where it came from. Last owner installed it. T25 turbine inlet flange.

Question: Anyone tried using this ceramic-based exopy putty for exhaust manifold?

They even have a picture of an exhaust manifold on it.

I am looking for a good temp solution for the rest of the season. I am planning to take it off this winter and give it to a buddy to weld. He has some experience welding cracked DSM manifolds. (grind out crack, pre-heating, welding, controlled cooling)

I'm pretty sure that's the same product I tried on an exhaust leak back towards the muffler on my Z32. I wasn't impressed. It was worthless near the muffler. I can't see it lasting very long on a manifold.

 

yeah, i'll just eat the downtime and get it welded.

If i use it temporary, i'll probably have to waste a lot of time cleaning it off later, so it doesn't contaminate the welds.


Side question: will an exhaust leak pre-O2 sensor mess the reading up?

fresh air is going to make the WB think you're running leaner than you actually are.

 

I had a loud exhaust leak on my old jeep and I used that stuff to fix the crack in the manifold. The stuff only lasted a day before turning white and flaking off but it was long enough to pass my state's vehicle inspection.

So air will enter the exhaust at the leak? At which conditions does this happen?

At idle, exhaust is definitely exiting the leak because I can feel it.

 

When you're in reverse, of course.
