Default Matt's (going) Insane! configuring VVT on AEM 1710 questions...

Not a whole ton of qustions at this point, more to come but im going to start with the VERY basic of my get-it-started questions now so i can get this thing up and running by saturday night!

1. Are the idle air control valves compatable between a 94-97 and my 2002? i want to get base IAC valve settings into the AEM

2. Crank position sensor signal will go to pin 2E and Cam position sensor will go to pin 2G?

3. VVT actuator/solinoid will be run to pin for injector 9 or 10? (3O or 3P respectively?)

4. Controlling fans through the AEM... this is done with external wiring, or do i connect the ECU to the wire formerly used on the thermostatic switch which was on the 1.6 coolant neck?

I am sorry for the simplistic questions, i have been out of the tuning mentality for a year and im trying to pick it back up with haste.

Matt

I have answered all of my questions besides the first one.

Are the idle air control valves compatable between a 94-97 and my 2002? i need to change settings from the 1.6 iirc.

EDIT: I found this post by Joe Perez... http://forum.miata.net/vb/showpost.p...75&postcount=2

If they are the same... why is it that when you do a 1.6 to 1.8 swap the tb needs to stay 1.6 or use 1.8 with modified settings?

The IAC valves are electrically similar, in that they all use a damped solenoid rather than a stepper motor or something like that. So the electrical circuit you use to drive them all is the same.

They have somewhat different operating characteristics however, in that they are designed to be driven at different frequencies, have different response curves, etc.

With an aftermarket ECU, this is not a problem. You just configure the driver appropriately.

A stock ECU can't be re-configured in this way, so if you're doing an engine swap, the IAC drive might wind up being sub-optimal. It's usually good enough, though.

The primary reason why folks swap throttle bodies when doing engine swaps is that stock 1.6 MT ECUs need to see the switch-type TPS which was unique to the 1.6 TM engine, and that TPS cannot be transplanted onto a 1.8 throttle body (they're mechanically incompatible.)

would the NA 1.8 and the NB 1.8 IACV operate on the same frequencies based upon the fact that they are interchangable?

Such that i could use the AEM settings for the 1800 engine calibration that they provide to get the car running and then tweak the idle settings...

IIRC the 1.8L NA and NB do not operate on same freq.

The NB runs at 600hz, the NA at 250iirc. over/under running them can make them very noisy.

just use the NA throttle body completely though? it bolts right on.

i was just questioning since i have an NB tb on the car and its nice not needing the provisions for IACV external to the intake pipe.
