Default Garrett GT2560R can't be repaired??

1.6 1993

I was about to fit my gt2560r to my built engine and had a quick finger test of the turbo shaft, I have a little back and forth and side to side play but the fins are not touching the castings.

I called a few garrett repair outlets here in the UK and was told by a couple of them that the garrett ball bearing turbos cannot be repaired, I was more or less told to throw it in the bin and buy a new one!

Is this true, I appreciate it would be harder to repair than a journal bearing turbo but un repairable??

If that's the case and the 'Garrett experts' here tell me my turbo is on the way out I may look at buying a different turbo option, just don't know which one....

This is true, there are only a few places that can do it worldwide. I know Owens Development can do it, but it sure if they take walk in customers like yourself.

I sent mine to Arizona to be rebuilt. Little hungover, it's too early, and don't remember the name of the shop. Flyin Miata sends theirs there and recommended them to me. Either call them Monday or maybe I'll remember after some food.

Aww another dead garrett.

I say run it until it makes horrible noises and you lose boost.

No drawbacks and if you are lucky it wont get worse.

Yors truely

Thanks for that, I guess I shouldn't have any shaft movement whatsoever? Can you recommend an alternative to the 2560 for a 1.6 (I think I just stepped into a minefield!)

Thanks but it's a bit too far from the UK....

I was running it at 15 psi on the old engine with no problems so you may be right, it's just worrying putting it on a built engine that cost me a small fortune!

Small turbine GT2860rs maybe?

The turbo you have is probably just right for a 1.6...well, "just right" in my opinion.

The conventional answer with the Garrett GT series is that a new CHRA is needed in order to 'rebuild' them. I'm all ears if there are indeed some shops can actually rebuild them as stated above though, that would be great info.

I'd be weary of any shop who says they can do it because I've heard its incredibly complicated and requires fancy press tools.

I'd go with ATP for the CHRA exchange because they ship so fast.
