1.6 vs 1.8 Turbo
Was talking to a lad last night who swore that the 1.6 came with a turbo from the factory for other model Mazdas, thus it is more robust and able to handle forced induction easier. I was not only told that the 1.6 would be more durable and longer-lasting, but that if two cars, a 1.8 and a 1.6, both had the same turbo system, the 1.6 would be a bit quicker. He also mentioned the 1.6 would be fine on stock internals whereas the 1.8 would need a beefier setup.
I find all of this very hard to believe as he had no anecdotal evidence on this. I have done some research myself in finding this out but with no luck.
Can somebody please clarify?

For requesting clarification?
Those of you who possess knowledge that I do not should not be frustrated when exchanging those knowledges. Humble yourself and deflate those egos before they BURST.
Anus is prepared and clenched.
Can you give me examples of both of these engines turbocharged from the factory?

By BP you mean the 1.8l miata engines correct? If so then yes you are correct. I believe that in the UK there were a few 1.6l miata that came with factory installed or dealer add on turbo upgrades briefly. I would actually have to pull out all my random miata books though to confirm that.
To the original question, the naturally aspirated 1.6 and 1.8 engines use the same rods, which are the limiting factor when turbocharging either one. I don't think this is a foolish question since there are so many armchair-experts with partial knowledge on any subject spreading misinformation. Good luck to you.

The BP was turbo'd in the 323 GTX before the MSM was even a twinkle in Mazda USA/Australia's eyes.
So the 1.8l engine was put in the 323 GTX? I honestly do not know my BP history to well as to what it all came in besides the miata. So if you say the 1.8l 323 GTX existed I will take your word for it.
Yes it did. That is why you occasionally find people selling the 1.8 gtx pistons/rods. The rods are supposed to be more robust then regular BP rods and be good to about 300rwhp like the pistons.
wrong the 1.8 gtx rods are the same as all the other bp rods. Only the mazda 323 gtr came with the stronger rods. Also some of the b6t rods came with stronger rods that can be used in the bp but the gtr rods are the strongest factory rods. You can make around 400whp with the stock gtr engine.

around 350 whp has been documented with the vj23 turbo thereildeal is his username. Another guy runs a gtr engine with a holset hy35 on a ford escort wagon. I have no idea how much whp he is making but he runs 2.5 bar and he runs it hard.
