I have no personal experience with how useful it is as I haven't even started my car up yet using the link keypad, but I thought this was worth sharing.
I guess it would be even better if there was a ready supply of serial link connectors.

Look up, you'll find a link to someone who does in this very thread. There's also a link to a wiring diagram so you can build your own.
The Link->USB box was pretty rare, and was just a SerialLink with an onboard USB converter. No, we don't have the SerialLink anymore.

fwiw I got DLL working on a windows 7 laptop with a usb to serial adapter.
The serial link works fine, just get a USB-Serial adapter and you're good to go. Windows still has no problem seeing serial ports and communicating with them. There's huge amounts of industrial equipment out there running on serial connections.
You may have to experiment a bit to find an adapter that works properly, but the process is generally quite easy.
