How Much HP Can I Expect 1.6-M45
#21
oscargarza88,
They did offer a boost kit for the 1.6-M45. It included a pulley that fit over the crank pulley as well as a smaller supercharger pulley, the belts and some engine management electronics. All the searching I've done seems to reinforce that my 139-140hp is about right for my set up. But, as I mentioned in my previous post I'm moving on to a 1.8 bored out
to 2.1. Looking for greater reliability on track.

sabatoeur,
Australia? That's odd, I don't denote any accent on your post.
Looking forward to getting there 1 of these days. On the list of things to do.
I just instructed one of your countrymen on the track last week, a Porsche event at a track in NJ, USA. It's sounds like you're getting decent power from your set up. If my car were a street car it would be fine-but on track it's been a PITA.
I really want to stick with the Miata because I enjoy driving it and it's one of the least expensive cars to track. I am luckily enough to drive pretty much what I want on track up to maybe $75-$100k. But, for me it's just about fun and I can't justiy going to a Vette, Porsche or whatever for 20-30 track days a year. My other fun cars are a 350Z conv., a 300zx conv., a boxster, 66 Mustang conv. and a 64 230sl conv. This is not my life but it's something I really enjoy. To keep it in perspective a Miata is a perfect car for me. I run with various Porsche, Vette and independent track clubs. I'm in the instructor group so there are some very good drivers and some very fast cars. A stock 1.6 is OK but a bit more power makes it more fun. The 1.6 & M45 keeps me from getting completelt run over but a bit more would be better. But over the years I keep running into nagging SC related problems that run into my track time and fun factor. So, this 1.8 to 2.1 conversion sounds like it could be the answer. I am optimistic this will work. Conversion is to start mid-June and I'll be back on the track Mid-July. Will keep you posted.

i have one as well except its only boosting 2psi for some odd reason so no help from me here. im wodering though u mentioned boost kit, from what ive found ive only found the boost kit for the 1.8's not the 1.6's....
do u know more about that boost kit.
And yes like they have said with a MS or some tuning im sure u could squeeze out a bit more power specially with water injection...

You dont need a kit. There are many companies who build custom pulley either for the blower snout or the crank. This is your calculation (Crank pulley size / Blower pulley size x step up ratio) x max rpm. I maxed out a M45 unit I had years ago just under 16k rpm. Boost means nothing for a blower. How efficient your pump (blower) flows will dictate boost (what TB size, boost tube size, IM etc).
That said as someone else mentioned, I would also look into your bypass to ensure that the lobe housing is seeing enough pressure from a closed bypass. It is possible that the bypass could be stuck open or the rod from the bypass is hitting something.
*edit* Saw you moved on....oh well. Did ou ever figure out the problem?

I was at the Carlisle Import and Kit Car Show this past weekend. This may be the largest show of it's type in the country. Huge turnout in general. There was 1 guy with a V8. LS1 with some modifications. Dynoed at 380rwhp. The guy did the build himself. Incredibly clean and professional. This was his 3rd year at the show.Drives the car from Michigan to Carlisle, Pa. My 302 is due here Friday and I'm scheduled to be on the track on Sun. Can't wait.

I've opted to replace my 1.6 M45 set up for a 1.8 bored out to 2.1, balanced and blue printed. With a 99 head and new header plus other accessories, expecting to get about 170rwhp, naturally aspirated. This should give me much fewer hassles on the track. Will be starting the swap mid-June. Plan is to get more power with less agg. More time on the track less time under the car.
That would require a 4mm overbore...
