Default 3.636 or 3.9 R&P?

I am undecided right now, I went for a 7 hour drive yesterday and man does the 5 speed suck with 4.10's. I was driving 120km/h and im at 4000rpm...does that ever go through gas pretty quick. So I seen the 3.636 ring and pinion on miata roadster website, price seems ok I guess, and it comes with everything necessary to do the swap. Whats up with the distance piece? Is that needed? Its impossible to find a 3.636 R&P I have searched everywhere! I found some 3.9 R&P but then I have so source a speedogear and its to much bullshit for me. What do you think would be better a 3.636 or 3.9 im running 20lbs of boost right now in the next month or so I will be at 30lbs. I also do use the highway alot. Would the 3.9 cut it for me or should i just go with the 3.636? Thanks, Mike.

3.9 would work for ya!

and all you gotta do is find a 3.9 torsen compleate unit out of a NB excluding MSMs and 03s.

I found a couple on car-part.com...all in the states though im going to give them a call tuesday and see if it can be shipped. Im assuming i dont need no distance piece with a 3.9 and i can just get the speedogear at a mazda dealership.

Won Ton is going to think I have something against him (I don't). If I were you, I'd look for a 6 speed transmission.

That's what I drive (with a 3.63 gearset I bought) and it has been the only way I've been satisfied with the rpms at cruising speeds on the highway.

I have been looking they want 900$ Canadian over here for one, and thats if you can source it. I found one its about 200km from me. But first i want to do my diff ratio i just bought the torsen 4.10s last year i should have went with the 3.9s. But i will be getting a 6 speed once i grenade my 5 speed.

I'm confused.

The guy is looking for a way to lower RPM on the freeway, right? Assuming the same R&P ratio for both (be it 3.636 or 3.9) a six-speed will result in a higher cruising RPM than a five-speed.

This.

Go 3.63's, help a bit with traction down low and much lower RPM's on the highway. I got a set myself that I'll be installing shortly now that schools out.

I understand. If you're going to keep your 5 speed for the time being; why not install the 3.63 gearset? It made a noticeable difference in my car when I was using it.

I blew the 5 speed later on and had to change to a 6 speed. I just kept the same diff.

yeah but he doesnt want to criuse at 3k+ rpm so a 6 speed will put him right back where he started from.

3.63 is worth the money if you street the car. I could use a little closer gearing on the track (250whp) but its worth it to cruise at 80mph at low rpm.

20lbs of boost on a 2871 and your still using a 5-speed? 3.6 + a 6-speed would be a good street option.

I figure I'll eventually do the 3.636. The gearing works out to basically the same as my E36, which I like.

get the 3.63 and be done with it. assembly is the only point agianst getting it at your powerlvl and you have effectively made that a moot point.
