5 lug swap

I am working on a 5 lug swap. It's not just to get the 5 lugs but also to have cheap bigger brakes with stuff I already have on hand (lots of Mustang parts and a trashed 88 RX7). My probable parts list is for the front is Ford 87ish Probe REAR hubs, 94-04 Mustang 11" V6/GT, rotors, FC RX7 Mazda 4 piston or 99-04 Mustang 2 piston V6/GT PBR calipers. I would like to use the Mazda calipers if possible but mounting and clearance issues may prevent it. The rear will probably be FC RX7 rotors, hubs and calipers.

The v6 and gt mustangs have the same brakes? I woulda expected the v8 model to have bigger ones. It is a mustang though... :eek3:

Yep same brakes front and rear. The Cobra's, Bullit's and Mach I's got bigger brakes.

Do a search on M.net. Someone already found a direct interchange for larger rotors off a VW Corrado that have significantly larger diameter than stock miata brakes.. Really, its not worth a 5 lug anymore than its worth putting a stock N/A 13b in a miata...

don't see a use in the 5 lug swap

My question although was geared more towards people who change over to the Ford 8.8 rear ends which have 5 lugs. Matching rear 5 lugs rims with 4 lug fronts is not as easy.

If your simply after advantages, how about larger rotors, different braking system.

I'm not against a five lug conversion. But the 8.8 ford rear end out of a mustang from 86-93 where 4 lug. I always thought 4 lug was a bad decision. But I never had a problem.
And I could pull the front wheels off the ground.

Just curious if anyone has converted their miata to 5 lugs all the way around. The reason Im asking is because I know alot of V8 guys change the rear ends out to something more heavy duty (assuming 5 lug). If it hasent been done, I was thinking about coming up with my own conversion for the front spindles at least.

I have you completely covered. Use NB calipers and brackets. 2002 Mazda protege hubs and rotors. The outer edge of the rotors need to be cut down 0.20" and a 0.25" spacer needs to go between the rotors and the hubs. The factory axle outers have the same splines. This will give you a 5x4.5 bolt pattern. Good luck.

Figured someone might be looking for a solution still. Instead of being negative I'll be helpful.

Wasn't trying to be negative, just impressed really.

Video on YouTube

There's a complete 5 lug conversion for the rear of a Miata on my YouTube channel Shields Automotive.

To what extent has the 5 stud conversion been overtaken by the availability of stronger 4 stud hubs?

All the prep done to the 4 stud hubs can be done to the 5 stud hubs. Plus there is more material which equals more strength.

Nice sidestep you have there.

Let me rephrase that question. If (as seems the case) the stronger 4 stud options solve the broken hubs/wheel bearing issues of the stockers, what advantage over that does a 5 stud hub give me?

It's not Just about advantages, but also preference as others are also looking for a 5 stud option. And as stated before any "stronger4 stud option" can be applied to the 5 stud option as it takes the same wheel bearing and has the same splines as well.
