I don't know that anyone is asking for exceptional performance out of the Tecnas. I think people are expecting it to ride exceptionally well, while still offering good performance on a track day or autox. If it's a straight-up autox or track car these aren't the best option: I get that. For jjman or whatever his name is, they'd be perfect because even though he's asking about race tracks, he doesn't actually intend to ever drive on one

What you, and a lot of other folks seem to miss, is the design goal for the tecna: Best possible ride quality on moderately lowered street Miatas. That's it. They are not race shocks.
I don't care if guys win Miata Challenge on them or not. What I do care about is drivers loving the ride quality on their daily commute. If you folks love the ride quality, we have succeeded in delivering on our promise. Many of us now have more than one Miata. One that mainly gets driven while wearing a helmet. The other while sipping a latte on the way to work. That daily gets more use as it's utility increases. Comfy stock seats with foamectomy, functioning cruise, A/C and power windows, nice sound system, few rattles, good gearing, quiet and a buttery ride that soaks up everything you throw at it but still handles well. Personally, I like a stock midpipe/muffler with an RB header. No drone but a pleasant muted growl when you stomp on it. That daily is what the tecna are designed for.
The tecna handle well on track, much better than stock but that is merely a happy by product of good bump travel, low hysteresis and well matched damping/spring rates. Not the primary design goal. Track focused coilovers should have adjustable damping in my opinion.

The problem, as I am discovering, is that the word "coilover" means "race" or "high performance" to most car enthusiasts. Think of the tecna as better riding OEM replacement shocks that can be lowered.

You would both be much happier with Tein Advances with optional 9kg front springs and NB mounts. We offer that kit for about $1100 shipped. 550/350 or 700/400 Xidas are the ideal kit for both of you but I understand not wanting to budget that for coilovers.

Acceptable vs optimized.
tecnas are acceptable on track or autocross, in my personal opinion. The stickier the tires are, the softer and "floatier" they'll feel.
Folks want a yes or no answer. I can't offer one. How much softness a person deems acceptable is a matter of personal choice.
I will never recommend tecnas as first choice to anyone that mentions autocross or track driving, even though they would still perform better than most low cost "performance" shocks.

I'd love to run autocross, but I work weekends 3p-11p fri, 7a-11p sat/sun. If I ever get off this shift I'll get into autocross, but for now I'm limited to backroads. Hallett is the closest track to me, but it's a 4 hr drive from home, plus the whole working weekends thing.

I really wish i understood those shock dyno charts. Anyone care to elaborate? I've never heard anything good about stance, so I dont know why you would go that route unless you are just looking for HELLAFLUSHSLAMMAGESTANCEBRO

Fireindc, do you see how the rebound side (bottom) of the graph traces don't start at 0? This is because the bleed and shim stack is not resetting while on the shock dyno at TDC (think crank/piston). What I believe this means is that if you were to hit a series of bumps/ripples the car would ride like **** and jack down on the bump stops. Normally 0-3 seconds is small everyday bumps, and 3-10 is high speed fast movements. 0-3 is the most important graph for ride quality because thats were 95% of your driving on the street is done there. You normally want 65% of your critical damping to finish before 3s and then digress to about a 30 degree slope from there. Whats surprising is the clickers on the rear look pretty decent and linear, if you had that thing revalved with a different piston and stack it might be decent, the front doesn't do ****. OTS, it rides like holy ****.
