So this isn't my car, it's a friends. He blew his diff doing digs down the vard. He doesn't have **** for money and can't buy a diff right now. He's not to computer savy and wouldn't know how to find anything on google, so I'm asking for him.


Can you weld a diff after it blows? Or does it depend on what broke?

If he broke the ring and/or pinion then no for sure. If he managed to break only the spider gears inside the diff itself, then maybe, because that's where the welding is going to happen anyway. Gonna be a slim chance there, though.

I've seen functional open diffs for as little as $50. Although I'm not seeing anything on ebay right now, when guys part out their cars or upgrade to Torsens, you can sometimes get them very cheaply.

I have a 1.8 R&P that I was keeping as a super duper emergency set that were in the diff when I grenaded my torsen. They chewed up some little torsen gear bits and have some bad burs on them. You could just file/grind the nasty **** off and end up with something to limp along with for a little while. $25 + shipping seems pretty fair.

If it's a 1.6 they all are weak diffs and fail at stock power and should not be trifled with. There's nothing to help them. If 1.8, wow. They are very difficult to break.

I heard of broken axles more often from hop.

2 people in this thread have lunched torsens due to wheel hop. As far as I know neither of us have broken axles.

Miata2fast broke a couple of axles naturally aspirated and so have a couple of others with turbos.

It's a 1.6 open diff. He found a diff in a junk yard and is going down next week to take it off. He just junked the one in his car so thanks for the help guys.

Still not sure what part he broke, but the junkyard one was 75$. So I guess he'll still be one wheeled fire.

Yup and I fixed my wheel hop issue with driving and after blowing up another 2nd gear in a 5 speed that had 280k miles on it I havent broken another dirvetrain part yet... except that something is all fucky in my clutch area now (had to keep adjusting the clutch rod out under the dash to have it keep disengaging and it makes a bad noise) and the car is retired for the year.

IIRC, bbundy has broken multiple axles.

I'd be surprised if there's a driveline part he *hasn't* broken at this point, but...
