I am frustrated with my NB Koni Sports and koni coilover sleeves. A friend has some koni races on his NA and he's looking for something a little softer. What would be the results (for both parties) of swapping shocks? Shocks and springs? Shocks, springs, and tophats? I think he has the same sleeves I do. I think I remember hearing complains about rear travel with the koni races, would that be fixed or made worse by using them on an NB?

The problem I'm having is some mild understeer, which I think would be fixed with different spring rates (I'm currently 450f 250r), and ride height. With 7" springs all around, I can't get the car down where I want it and there is only one perch height, and I am nervous about coil bind on 6" springs.

 

What are the spring rates on the race shocks? They will bolt in no problem as whole assemblies. Your buddy may not like your setup. It might raise him up to high. Have you tried messing around with a rear sway bar? If you have one and it is on full stiff then you may want to put the front on full soft. Sway bars are a tool to tune your handling.

Other option is to send your shocks in to property in chatsworth Ca. To have them rebuilt and shortened. If you call them talk to Jeff. He will take care of you.

I don't know the spring rates on the race shocks, I think they are a little stiffer than what I have but with a better front/rear ratio.

My sway bars are contributing to my understeer, but I know the spring rates are off and the ride height is too high, so in the interest of changing one thing at a time (sort of) I am going to fix those and see if I still need to work on the sways. I have the big RB bar in front (on the soft setting) and the stock bar in the rear.

I am trying to get these issues fixed for as little money as possible, so suggestions are appreciated. If my friend doesn't want to swap (which I won't blame him at all, I do think my stuff might make his car sit too high, especially since I would probably want to keep my tophats), my other thought was just to have another notch machined into the shock bodies I have 2-2.5 inches lower, and change the spring rates (and maybe use 8" springs).

 

I thought you said you had coilover sleeves?

They are as low as they can go... the NB sports only have one circlip height, and the perches are as low as they can go on those sleeves on that circlip.

 

What about just getting shorter springs and going to a higher rate. You can get spring fairly cheaply.

odd thought...I had 8" 250# rear springs on my koni sports and I had plently of go low left.

dont the koni sleeve alows you to adjust the perch much lower than the circlip point itself?

 

But shorter springs will bind, won't they? I don't want to go stiffer because this is mostly a street car, and because 450 is already at the limit of the sports.

The sleeves do not allow the perch to go lower than the circlip unless I did something horribly wrong on installation, and even then I can't see how they would. I wish I could investigate these things without taking them all the way off the car.

You probably had the NA version of the sports with multiple options for where to put the circlip, right? That's sort of what I'm thinking, is just adding another location for the clip.

 

I was under the impression that the sleeves had an inner ring that rested on the circlip...there should be a good inch of threading that extends lower.

shorter spring doesn't always mean bind...the lower the car, the less likely for spring bind.

Mine look sort of like that first picture, except the sleeves aren't that long. There is a lot more shock showing on mine. I also have 7 coils of spring showing. Being installed on the car I can't get any good pictures.

 

300# on the rear is fine for street use.

 

So nobody has mentioned yet what Koni Race shocks are like on an NB... or what NB koni sports are like on an NA...

How about some sleeves and perches that will fit the koni shock bodies but ACTUALLY allow the perch to be below the circlip? Maybe I will just try 6" springs on the front and see what happens.

 

I have NB KONI sports on my NA. They're exactly like NA KONI Sports on an NA except with only one perch spot and a bit more travel due to the better NB tophats.

KONI springs suck donkey ***** though, the ride hight is all over the place and my fronts have sagged that much they're nearly binding at rest.
