I want to buy one of these since they're cheap and look right, but I'm afraid that having a replica wheel will make me into a colossal ------

eBay Motors: Nardi NOB TANIGUCHI MODEL CLASSIC STEERING WHEEL SPARCO (item 280328462254 end time Apr-05-09 23:30:29 PDT)

Slight deviation, but related.

I'd love to find a way to either bring the stock wheel an inch or two closer to me, or an aftermarket wheel with the same diameter as stock. Reason- I'm quite tall, and when I sit in a car with one of these tiny wheels, it completely blocks my view of the OPG, and cuts off the top of the speedo and tach.

Thoughts?

that's why I got the dished wheel. I couldn't use the brakes without my knee hitting the stock wheel. now it's fine. it's almost the same diameter as stock.

this is about eye level:

Im confused why would the stock wheel hit your knee and this one doesnt. Is this one closer to you then the stock wheel?

correct. my last miata had leather seats and you actually sat lower than the cloth ones, since I got the new one, the first thing I had to do was get a new wheel. Now my knees dont hit the steering wheel and it's closer to me. It makes driving the car that much better, I highly suggest a new wheel.

closer by like 3 inches. I can drive with my nipples.

Just so im safe, any wheel? Im heavily leaning toward the momo. The nardi wants to much.

Braineack 04-06-2009 10:39 AM

Mines slightly smaller in diameter. 300m vs 350mm stock, IIRC. What I I really like the most is that the wheel is closer, but there's something about this one that makes turning easier and more comfortable, especially with no P/S. I can measure both if you give me a few minutes.

boileralum 04-06-2009 11:07 AM

Stock is closer to lik 370mm. My Momo is 350mm, just a tad smaller than stock, but IMO a perfect size.

Braineack 04-06-2009 01:41 PM

My stock is 370mm with a dish of 110mm. Aftermarket is 340mm with a total dish of 140mm. Probably weighs 7-10lbs less than the stock with the airbag.

boileralum 04-06-2009 01:42 PM

Oh yeah, I forgot about the weight. Not even including the airbag, the stock wheel is a porker.

Saml01 04-06-2009 01:51 PM

You guys know me, heres a paranoid question.

Is it safe getting those cheap wheel hubs? Like the one someone mentioned from Sonicmotor.com. Its only 20 bucks. I worry about the wheel coming off in my hands while im driving.

9671111 04-06-2009 01:52 PM

My knee rubbing up against the wheel when I go to brake is the bane of my existence. I think I've developed a considerable ache in my ankle because of it.

disturbedfan121 04-06-2009 01:59 PM

sam my ebay hub is working great since early 08.....i wouldn't trust the ebay detachable hub tho. as i went to install mine it littereally fell apart. the spring and button for the release fell out of the hub and my wheel woulda fallen off

levnubhin 04-06-2009 02:02 PM

I've also been using an ebay hub for 2+ years with no problems.

Howd you guys kill the airbag indicator? Stick a specific resistor into the leads, or something more clever?

Braineack 04-06-2009 02:24 PM

yep, cheap "zinc" ebay hub here. solid, not detachable.

the link i posted before is my exact wheel/hub...

wire the two wires together. problem solved. 90-93.

94+ requires a 3ohm resistor, just measure whatever the resistance is then try to match it with a resistor. (I used three 10ohms in parallel, but it only worked 50% of the time).

Saml01 04-06-2009 02:33 PM

Well. Thanks for all the tips guys, I guess im gonna have to give this just a bit more thought.

We went to a strip joint friday night and instead of buying a steering wheel today, i spent my money on lap dances.

lap dances never pay off. you just get frustrated and depressed and end up smelling like cheap lotion and perfume.

make sure you get a 3 ohm resistor that's pretty tight tolerance.
