What about a 500tq transmission?

Default What about a 500tq transmission?

I realize I know little compared to many at this point, but I may be trying to tackle attaching a 300zx transmission to a BP as an engineering project. It would take time, since I have much to learn.

So far the basics I know that make this swap interesting:

1.) It'll do this,

So arguably good to around the 500tq or slightly beyond range with the weakest link being syncros going out at high power levels, but can be rebuilt relatively easily.

2.) Cheap, around the $300 mark for a good one.

3.) Gearing ratios are:1st 3.214

2nd 1.925

3rd 1.302

4th 1.000

5th 0.752
If anyone needs a refresh, that's similar 1-4 and a longer 5th gear. So,

Engine speed with Miata trans in 5th at 75mph with 4.1 diff: 3700rpm
Engine speed with z32 trans in 5th at 75mph with 4.1 diff: 3400rpm

4.) Possiblity of using miata hydraulics easily, both push style clutch.

5.) Relative length from bellhousing to shifter location is within 1" of each other, with OTS shift relocates available, normally for 240sx.

Issues:

1.) Input spline count is 24 vs miata 22

2.) 2 inch larger diameter clutch, so trans may be much too wide to work.

3.) Input Shaft Diameter:0.937 in. miata
Input Shaft Diameter:0.750 in. 300zx

4.) Found some forum post that the input shaft is 3" and 3/8" from tip to entering the snout on the trans. That's about all I could find online at the moment.


I've just been chatting with a company that makes adapters and it is possible but still have measuring of the hard stuff to do and adaptation of input shaft, spline count, clutch option and other more technical issues. Please let me know if we already know this is a terrible idea that's been tried before; I figured this forum would be a good place to ask for any specific measurements I may need in the future. As my miata may end up being a guinea pig for such a swap, fail or success, I'll share it here.

Good luck, I hope it works out.

Power does not kill synchros. Poorly stepped flywheels, improperly adjusted clutch hydraulics, and/or n00b driving kills synchros.

I never said I was, but that's where I see these transmissions survive. And they generally have 0 mechanical sympathy.

don't search for the at least 2 giant threads we already have on retrofitting stronger transmissions or anything. there's more than that, but I can think of at least 2 off the top of my head

These last two with actual research, measurements, progress, and plethora of really cool ideas.
Theres dozens of strong transmissions. Heck, likely hundreds. And only a handful are even remotely candidates for a miata fitment

I will, been following the current T5 adventure. I think I am not the only one constantly searching for a high HP solution. Didn't find anything on this option and started to explore it as they are easier and cheaper to find than the rx7 trans. Just an idea I am exploring for a college project.

like an LS swap, and like any other swap, the price of the engine/transmission is always the easiest/cheapest piece of the puzzle.

Depends on what level of drifting your talking about. Many of the pro built cars rely on grip to carry the speeds and power to spin the tires. Even a spinning tire is creating a good of torque though the system.

I'm dong a trans swap now that will handle way over 500 torque. It's a C4 automatic 3 speed that's been built. The trans is pyshcially tiny so it's possible (i think) to make it fit. Most transmissions won't fit without tunnel modifications.
