Retiring from Formula 1 after the end of the 1962 season, Porsche returned to road-racing a year later with the debut of the Porsche 904. This marked the beginning of a series of phenomenal Porsche racing cars that eventually led to the iconic 917. Only 106 street-legal units were built to meet homologation regulations, making the Porsche 904 one of the rarest vehicles to come from Stuttgart.

Since then, multiple independent companies have recreated replicas and kit cars to pay homage to the original. Now, Gullwing-America has revealed its own efforts, showing off images of its very own retro P/904 Carrera.

According to Gullwing-America, the prototype will be built upon the 2005 – 2011 Porsche Boxster platform, complete with modern hardware. The P/904 Carrera will be powered by the same 3.4-liter boxer engine producing 295-hp mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Power steering and ABS from the Boxster will also remain.

Interior wise, the P/904 Carrera will be offered complete with all the necessary modern conveniences including air conditioning, as well as an instrument panel and center console with GPS navigation and iPod dock. Rather than carrying over the Boxster’s dashboard to fit into the new P/904 package, Gullwing-America put the effort to recreate a more period-correct interior to match the retro exterior. Unique seats and steering wheel are also installed.

Finally, the exterior sports LED lights, a lowered ride height, classic 18-inch Fuch design 5-spoke wheels that fill each wheel well, as well as a retractable active rear spoiler.

The conversion is estimated to cost 70,000 euros, not including the donor Porsche Boxster.

Back in the 1970's I was helping a friend build a kit car version of this. VW chassis, with a hump-back trunklid to cover the engine. Company took his deposit, sent a couple of brocures, and then went belly up. Never saw anything as far as parts or refund, ever.

Wow, that sucks. I've always tossed the thought of a kit car and this would def be number one if I could afforf it but it would most likely be something I'd do closer to retirement.

I don't mind replicars, but seeing someone stick a body like that onto a modern Porsche kind of pains me. It's about as sad as some fаggoty body kit slapped onto a Honda or Countach body kit on a Fiero (and yes, there are about a dozen different companies making that one.)

If you want to build a cool car in kit form, don't start with a car that's already cool. You'll just wind up with a somewhat heavier version of a cool car that's slightly less cool than when you started.

Start with a bare tube-frame chassis. Hang a lightweight GRP body on it. Provide affordances for the user to select from a variety of powertrains, ranging from a pre-'76 Volkswagen engine if they live in CA, to a modern factory-turbocharged Subaru if they don't.

Not trying to say the kit 904 has the best overall setup but a boxter chasis is def much better than a fiero. And the 904 IMO is a much better looking car than the cars you have pictured.

And I suppose that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Frankly, the 550 Sypder makes me horny.

But I stand by my basic point. A rebody kit for a modern car is just pointless.

You may be interested, however, to know that both Thunder Ranch and Special Edition (Beck) also have a 904 replica which, like their other cars, uses a tube-frame chassis rather than sitting on an existing pan. As such, they're lighter and faster than either the original 904 or any rebody kit. They also support the use of air-cooled 911 engines, so props there for authenticity.





No Boxster will ever make that noise.

I've seen the other companies that make them.....but nothing really comapres to the look of the one in the original post. Sexiest thing on wheels hands down

Edit: I'm not against tube fame cars, I'd actually like that for the weight but I like the idea of combining the best of the old with the best of the new to create ultimate cars. Unless you're going to have a true 904 throw in something worth hearing. Ex: VQ35, Rbxx, GT2, too many to run through a list

It is a badass looking car, but since no one has said it yet, I will. I think it would be more badass with some sort of LS engine in it, perhaps the LS9?
