Ordered the 245/40/15 to use on a 15x10. I'll be able to directly compare to a 225 RS3. I'm curious to hear results from my works chumpcar team, since they currently use 245 Maxxis VR1's on their E30 and they will be testing the RS4's.

Nice edit on the wheel pic, Emilio... ;)

Good timing. Love my 205 RS-3's and almost time to change to 225"s

Ordered a set to replace the 245 VR-1s on Acamas, but I will do a single session on them in Rover to benchmark against the 245/40 RC-1 as well.

Please head up to Oroville and provide some wet feedback.

Our team love the ad808rs in the wet and dry, it'd be awesome if we could find a 225 that had better grip in the dry without sucking in the wet.

Nice price for the 245, especially when compared to the 245 Rival S at $171. Will be interesting to see how they stack up against the new BFGs and Nexens.

aidandj 02-16-2017 12:52 AM

I'm still praying that they will wear like the RS-3s.

Same. At that price I have my hopes up. It would be awesome to have a true 200tw option instead of another Super200.

aidandj 02-16-2017 01:28 AM

Oh man. $134 245s that last a season or 2 and dont wear out on the drive to MRLS. If thats the case I think we have reached HPDE nirvana.

I am getting into a slight pickle with trying to determine which route I should go. Should I wait another few weeks for the RS4's to come in, or go ahead and get the Rival S? My first autox of the year is early March and track days soon to follow, so I would like to start out fresh. The car does see street time as well, and is currently on stock warped wheels with shitty tires. I can autox this setup but do not feel comfortable putting it on the track just yet. My 6UL's are in the mail so I will have them soon enough. Any advice on which tire I should go with?

I had the same dilemma because my first practice event is on 2/19 and I could not wait any longer for this or the 245 Rival S to show up. I decided to grab what was proven (Rival S in 225 on a 9" wheel) knowing I can always switch to something else if the inevitable testing shows vast improvement. Pretty safe to say driver mods will help me more than more tire so I'll probably just stick with that setup all season.

AndyHollis 02-16-2017 11:08 AM

Bird in hand.

RS4 not likely to be > Rival-S. Equal? Maybe.

black bandit 02-16-2017 11:23 AM

Very valid points, I was thinking more on the lines of best bang for the buck. This is my first year out on the track so I know I won't be breaking records or anything, would like something to last a while so I can spend more money on seat time than tires.

The Rival-S 1.5 dropped speed rating from W to V. That's really low. It indicates the tire doesn't shed heat as well as the original Rival-S. Fine for autocross. All the other 200tw's are rated W.
The sole 200tw's in 205/50/15 that are rated a lowly V, are the Rival-S 1.5 and RE71RVUp to 149 mphWUp to 168 mphYUp to 186 mphZ149 mph and over
Another interesting tidbit is the load rating. The Rival-s 1.5 jumps from LL (light load) 81 load index 51psi max to SL (standard load) 87 load index 44 max psi. I'd say that's an indication of significant changes to the casing and heat shedding ability of the tire. The 1.5 also gains 1lb over the previous Rival-S.

Neven Sur4 tread depth 9/32"
Rival-S 1.5 tread depth 7.2/32"

The potentially softer compound Nexen Sur4G due in the next month or two shares all the same specs as the current Sur4

I must have gotten lucky...ended up with a NOS set made last January that are 81W LL.

I think you are reading too much into this.

My understanding was that they needed to get certain load ratings for a couple of applications, so they just dropped the speed rating across the board. I can find out more, if you really care.

Nothing changed in "heat-shedding" ability, for sure.
