At Fukushima-I, the reactor vessel itself is still intact, and the sequence of events has thus far resembled that which occurred in the meltdown event at Three Mile Island Unit 2 in 1979 (loss of cooling, venting of steam, hydrogen explosion) and appears that the reactor itself is presently in a shutdown condition, requiring only decay cooling. It's an ugly situation, and there has been a release of radioactive steam, but a full-scale Chernobyl event just isn't in the cards.

I'm pretty sure no green energy we develop will be as good as nuclear. Not as efficient, not as cost efficient, not as clean. We can just cover the face of the earth with a wind turbine every 1/8 mile to support our near futures power demands. Why build many fewer of the safest power source we know, nuclear...

So I'm sure most everyone knows about this by now. But it's crazy. Been watching the live cameras in Hawaii and the west coast. Hope it doesn't hit us too hard. Japan is the kind of country we need to help...we shouldn't have wasted all those resources on Hati...some help yes, but not as much as we did.

windmills killing birds got the epithetical liberals to protest.
the smart thing to do would be to repurpose the spent rods in containers at water treatment plants and install a permanent hot water utility supply pipe in everyone's house so that hot water is now an offsite item. that would be awesome.
or you could put it in the ocean
and then when the teenage mutant ninja sharks came after you...

Nuclear power is win. Best solution we have right now. Fear mongering/uninformed public will continue to kill it.
That **** sucks for Japan. My brother was stationed there, left to come back to the states a couple days before this happened. Glad he missed out on that one. I imagine there are few things scarier than watching the sea just swallow up the land around you.

What? The public has no ******* clue what goes into nuclear regulations, nor do they give a rats *** about it, other than being ignorantly in fear that a meltdown will turn their children into fungus. The "problem" is that nuclear facilities are running on 30 year old technology and no one from FERC has the ***** to make concessions to use newer technology, nor does anyone working in nuclear have the ***** to challenge FERC...Perhaps the 'youtube' generation will be brave enough (god that's a scary thought...) to make the regulatory changes to put us on par with the rest of the world, but for right now we're stuck with the 60 year old consultants who could give two ***** about an automated control system when their mechanical controls have keep the plant from melting down for the time being.
