Article 5 would need to be invoked by Turkey for the Nato treaty to be enforced. A Russian fighter straying into turkey by .62/mile hardly will cause that to happen. But hey, I guess if you want to make the argument it "could happen" then fine.
Just because a politician makes drivel on the airwaves doesn't make it true...

Turkey shoots down a Russian jet that's bombing Syria. Russia retaliates against Turkey by destroying an AWACS aircraft. Turkey fires rockets. Russia bombs an airbase. Pretty soon, people are starting to use the phrase "limited tactical nuclear engagement" with a straight face.

This is a most... difficult announcement. As you know, things have not been going well back home. Well, it's gotten worse - a lot worse.
Yesterday, a Soviet destroyer challenged the blockade. Several warning shots were fired across her bow; she did not respond. A second volley was fired, there still was no response - none.
The nuclear destroyer USS Cunningham launched two of her Falcon missiles. Both struck the Soviet vessel amidship. She broke in two and sunk. Eight hundred of her crew were lost.
This morning, an American surveillance satellite was struck by a Soviet laser fired from the Sergei Kirov space station. The American satellite was destroyed.
The United States has broken off diplomatic relations with Russia. All ambassadors have been recalled. The Soviet ambassador has been expelled, along with the entire staff. All American air defense and satellite defense forces are on full alert. Premier Ulanova made a televised address and said that technically, a state of war exists between our two countries.
All American personnel are ordered to leave Soviet territory immediately or they will be placed under arrest. All Russian personnel are similarly ordered to evacuate American territory.
As a result, by direct Presidential order, the three of you must leave the Leonov. No Russian citizen is allowed to remain on or is allowed to enter the Discovery; this order is effective immediately. The launch window for re-entry is 28 days. The Discovery has enough fuel for a low-consumption trajectory.
HAL appears to be reactivated and is functioning well enough to operate the onboard systems. The Leonov has enough fuel for a low-consumption trajectory that will arrive 12 months earlier. The launch windows are critical for both spacecraft. Only communications of an emergency distress nature are allowed between the Leonov and Discovery.
I know you people are caught in the middle of this; in a sense, we all are. I wish there was something I could do. The only thing left for us is to pray: pray for the safety of our families, for our countries, for our planet. May God forgive us... and protect us.

Here you go Joe. Probably still plausible today. Not surprising to see the same old Boss/Worker relationship happened then and there. Boss = "do this ASAP, it's important". Worker bee = "sure... whatev."
"KGB field officers were not universally excited. Some complained the seemingly arbitrary deadline for the new requirements resulted in data points that were somewhat less sound than they should be. But Andropov and the KGB leadership made those requirements a top priority for all field operations, as well as for the intelligence agencies of its Warsaw Pact allies. They sold this initiative as the need to be out in front of what was seen as an inevitable surprise attack from the West."

Ever notice how none of these nut cases ever attacks someone who will shoot back? Schools, Planned Parenthood, Developmental Centers for the Disabled...
OK, one Ft. Hood (before someone points it out).

Just yesterday, I was looking at an infographic which detailed the frequency of mass-shootings in the US. For 2015, there's been more than one a day on average. I was going to post it, but decided "Nah, Brainey will just think I'm stirring the pot."

I'm not sure what causes only certain mass shootings to draw national attention.
Prediction:
1: Some people will call for stronger gun-control measures as a knee-jerk reaction.
2: Other people will claim that gun-control laws do not deter criminals, they only disarm victims.
My take: Stop trying to regulate things like magazine capacity and grip style- this is just skirting around the problem. If you want to directly address mass shootings, pass a federal law which limits the number of people that any one individual may murder at a time.

Serious note: It's funny to see people talk about mental health as the source of mass shootings and say how we need to "solve that problem first". OK.
I'm old enough to remember when there were state run mental institutions and if you were deemed "unfit" that's where you went. Bad places for sure.
Because of money (states) and a shift in the public view towards them we moved the responsibility of caring for anyone with a mental health issue, however bad the issue may be, to the parent/family who generally has limited ability to provide that care.
Then we look on in shock how these mass murders happen.
Don't know the answer... just sayin'.

I honestly wonder about the proliferation of psychotropic drug prescriptions for (relatively) mild conditions and how that plays into these events. The incidence of psychotic/violent episodes as a side effect may be extremely rare, but when you've got a few hundred thousand people on these drugs...
