How (and why) to Ramble on your goat sideways

Quick question because i don't even feel like this needs its own thread.
Why don't more people use a personal computer(i.e a laptop) as a EMS?
I feel like it would be almost too easy once the program portion was worked out. Maybe im overlooking something major. I would be a bit upset if i had to wait for the OS to load every time before starting my car tho.

1: You'd still need a lot of external hardware to handle the physical I/O. Your laptop doesn't have any ports which would be capable of driving an injector or reading the output of an analog sensor.
2: Modern computers have operating systems which process interrupts in nondeterministic ways. This means that they are not true "realtime" processors. Variable interrupt latency cannot be tolerated in an ECU. In other words, when you see the crank trigger signal go by, you need to be able to start the ignition timer now, not whenever the OS feels like it.
3: Cost.
4: Ruggedness.
5: Convenience.
6: Size.
7: When you say "Open the pod bay doors," you want the damned pod bay doors to simply open, without having a conversation about how the computer feels about this request.

Damn, why the hell is everyone on CR so god damned retarded? I'm reading through the "pictures of local rice" thread and half the pictures posted are slammed civics that everyone makes fun of... as though their slammed Miatas are any better.

That hale better not have messed up any of my cars. Just had a shaft pass over in a sever storm, dropped large marble size hale for about 2 minutes. Some chunks sounded more like golf ball size. I'm more worried about my RX7 actually, the Miata is in **** poor shape anyway.

I only owned one, the little yellow ****** with green tank and orange trigger.
I recall one of the ones with a backpack tank and remote gun, but I can't remember if it was mine or someone else's I used.
PS, that guy gets all of the *****.
