The one I saw looked deeply despondent, disheveled, dirty. Inexplicably, he wore a pocket protector.

Just saw this thread.... even though I posted a few days ago about my "new" bike.

Here is my attempt at a skinny tire bike that doesnt break the bank.... got (now) 4 almost complete junker bikes for $20 but I used mostly this Miyata setup to get it to where it is now... which is still incomplete.

Wife hates that we have 6 bikes chilling right now... going to give away the other frames unless she wants me to build her a skinny tire (keeping them until i ride mine with her and she wants one)

My old beats MTB. Started its life as a Rocky Mountain flow and then I bought a Norco frame because the RM was way too big for me.

Just realized a $2 disposable camera takes the same photos as a $800 iphone in the hands of hipsters.

Similar picture as above... but I have the rear derailleur on, seat on, pedals on and brake lines on.

Miyata ready to go minus chain and shifter cables. by Shlammed, on Flickr

Took the bike into the bike shop today and had a chain sized and I picked up some shifter cables. Going to be running both front and rear... no worries about them.

I rode the bike (in high gear because no cables) and it worked great for the 50m i rode it LOL. Cant wait to get some real time on it and see how it is.

Bike price: $5 (4 bikes @$20 total)
Tires/tubes/rim wrap:$73
Chain/shifter cables:$34

Bike total: $112

Pretty cool being that I didnt reuse any shitty parts or buy anything cheap for the purpose of keeping it budget, but I did keep that in mind.

Time to sell the other bikes to get my total investment down to $50 or less.

****, 3rd flat in 3 weeks. I haul *** and the roads I take are anything but forgiving... but 3?! I'm replacing the rim tape and getting some beefier tires. It costs me $8 ******* dollars a day to park so it's worth keeping my **** rolling.

Thats pretty steep for parking. Glad I dont work downtown some days.... but I miss living DT sometimes..

question for the bike gurus... Looking to improve my braking experience...
I have matching (vintage) shimano brake levers and single pivot cantilever calipers. (pictured below).

Will upgrading to a more modern dual pivot caliper (tektro or similar) gain me any braking performance?

Im used to disc's on my mtb and these calipers suck a fat one when i compare them.

Yeah get some cheap used Shimano dual pivot calipers (105). The arms on the old/cheap single pivot brakes were too flexible to actually have any bite.

Also, replace your cables/housings/end caps and get new brake pads. They look a little past it, which will lead to mushy brakes.

already did the cables and housings. asked the guy in the bike shop about pads and he said that they werent that bad and that they were better than what some cheaper pads will be. just to take them to some sandpaper and scuff them up before i really ride the bike.
