Went there on Memorial day a few years ago and watched Bush conduct the wreath laying ceremony and the speech. Huge crowd, of course. There was a hubbub in the crowd. The soldier actually stopped, faced the crowd and in a loud voice commanded silence and repsect for the fallen. You could have heard a pin drop after that. I'm glad that he did it, too.

My wife and I actually took it upon ourselves to visit each of the war memorials that day. It was the least that we could do.

When I visited it was storming, and the lightning was the closest I'd ever seen it, and it didn't phase them a bit. Awesome.

I need to instill some of this in my Joes, you'd think they stopped teaching drill and ceremony at BCT altogether...

All of the training and discipline has gone soft compared to what it was. It's like all branches secretly went Air Force or something.

Hard training and hard discipline is never appreciated by soldiers until it saves their lives. And those of members of their platoon.

I got a 4 hour class on "proper D&C" everything else is just BS point A to point B crap, kinda disappointing.

I'd love to be able to do Honor Guard there but 6' minimum, I'm 5'10, oh well.

They do that all day every day if there's even a light murmur in the people gathered around.

I have total respect for those guys with leaf blowers. It's about time people started appreciating the groundskeepers of america!

Agreed.

I was at Arlington with my Dad when I was younger, and while it was "special" and he explained everything to me, I didn't truly understand.

I'd like to go back and check it all out again.
