Since the dawn of the FPS in my life, I have always remapped the keys to
A = move left
S = move right
E = Move forward
C = Move reverse
D = toggle crouch/prone
F = shoot - also mapped to left mouse
I always thought that the default WASD movement maps were somewhat lethargic. Most likely, some computer programmer in one of the earliest FPS ever made decided that WASD was a good substitution for the arrow keys, and it gave him more keys to use with his left hand. Then the industry standard somehow became the POS WASD defaults.

I mean, I sit on top of ranks in almost all FPS I play...I would not be able to play with your keymapping. I've been using wasd since ~1990.

and before that I was using the arrow keys, in a WASD configureation with my right hand. Back in the days when you had to type all your commands.
My first PC game was the Black Couldren. Then Gold Rush, then Police Quest, then Hero's Quest.
Yeah I suck dick on FPS console games.

I'm trying it, can't make it feel natural.
For me, it was always the cursor keys + mouse. Worked fine for everything from Space Quest through the end of the Apogee / Id era.
I honestly think Portal (flash version) was the first WASD game I ever played. Same concept, slightly different fingering... Works the same.
Who remembers this error?

Anyone who has been using WASD for just a couple of weeks is going to hate my keymap. I used to hate the concept of the FPS, so it took me a long time before I finally started playing FPSs (Unreal Tournament Demo on brand new high school iMacs in typing class), but within about 5 minutes I was sick of WASD, and remapped the keyboard by simply visualizing what I felt each keypress *should* do for me. The end result is that my pinkie became useful, and I pretty much owned the rest of the class for several weeks until guys started standing behind me to watch what I was doing, and realized my keymap was vastly different.
If you've played on a WASD layout for a couple of weeks (let alone decades) then going "EACS" is going to be retarded difficult to learn - it's kind of like a German telling you that German is a better language than English. German might be better for him, and English better for you - and each of you could learn the other person's preference (likely the German already knows English, anyways) - but it wouldn't be enjoyable to try to make the switch.
