Questions on IAT and where to mount in SC Car
Hi Guys,
Been reading a lot on these forums. trying to soak in as much info as possible. I just received a new MS2 bought from another user this week. The description is as follows:
MS2 enhanced from revenant. set up for 1997 1.8l with sequential fuel injection, calibrated from him to run 460cc injectors running n/a, with PS and AC. its NEVER been installed.
The car I plan on using this on is a 97 with an m45 supercharger, ac, ps...
i do have 460cc injectors but not installed. The unit did not come with an iat and the question i have is what would be the best place to mount the iat on an sc car? i am not running an intercooler at this point. and which would be the best one to buy? i see a stainless and aluminum bung versions are offered. any thoughts or suggestions would be great? thanks

Well first question would be what is your intake piping made out of? Assuming its aluminum tubing running from the SC to the TB, go with the aluminum bung option unless you are a MAGI and can weld a stainless bung onto your aluminum piping. You can also choose to tap the tubing you have now with the correct threading to mount the sensor directly into it or get the bung welded on and run the sensor in it.
Alternatively, your post makes it sound like you will have an intercooler in the near future. If this is true I'd go ahead and wire and install the IAT near the TB or relatively close with extra wiring. When the IC is finally in your system, you want the IAT to be installed at or just after the IC outlet. This gives you minimal heat soak and an appropriate reading for IATs.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't decided on an intercooler yet. Will have to see how things go. i do have the aluminum crossover pipe but i've read that having the iat sensor up in the engine will screw with the readings when the car is started after being hot. i'm just trying to get some suggestions on where to put the iat for my current configuration to prevent heat soak. if that's my only choice then that's where i'll mount it. Thanks again

I've not yet installed my turbo, but having my IAT installed in the engine bay on the hot side with the stock intake I've even had heak soak issues with hot starts. Granted, my AFRs in these situations are high at idle (greater than 15) but once you get driving its minimized. It may be less when on the cold side right before the TB but I've read of similar conditions occurring regardless.
If I were you running a wonderful MS with IAT and all, get a cheap intercooler system now for more potential power and efficiency and do the sensor install ONCE. If you use whatever tubing you have now it will work, but you'll have to redo it later when you finally want that IC. With the crossover tube, you'll have similar hot start issues regardless of where you place the IAT. Obviously, farther from the exhaust and not behind the radiator will give you less trouble, but you'll still get heatsoak at any of its possible locations. From what I've read, you're only really safe from it down in front of the radiator, post IC outlet for good readings.

The throttle body ( real one) on the blower is back on the blower its self normally, adding an intercooler has an effect of adding a ton of volume to the "manifold" you run into issues with idle droop and throttle lag if you just toss in a cheap old intercooler.
another option is Alcohol/water injection, or a dual TB set up... the TDR intercooler set up works well, but is $$.
Mount the IAT as close to the intake manifold as you possibly can with the S/C. If you add water injection, spray before temp. ( IAT temps on the m45 may get as hot at 240*, and will evaporate the water/meth before it hits sthe sensor)

last night the ambient sensor on my DD, which is in front of the radiator, read 50°F after It was parked in my garage for a few minutes. It quickly dropped to 27°F when I backed out of the driveway.

personaly, I'd be game for using nitrous rather than Meth. to cool the intake charge.
If I had to guess, M45 with a "25" shot from 4000-7000 rpm would work... and likely make crazy power for an m45... but one small miss step in the tuning, and the whole things going boom!
but, it would be fun right up to that point.

In most YouTube videos, it would seem the greatest elation happens immediately prior to panic despair, so I would conclude that the moment before boom = fun
In reality a 25 shot would prob. Be fine, nO2 under boost behaves a bit differently though, and is more effective with the combine charge cooling, and extra oxygen. Just make sure you fuel for it.

I don't think i want to mess with adding no2 to the car but thanks for the suggestion. Here is the car as it sits now
From my reading i believe i will need to remove the msd ignition module and the afpr. It also came with the dummy throttle body and yes i will need to change that radiator out real soon. any more input from you guys? thanks!

I prefer to inject water over anything else. Its cheaper and less of a boom when you inject it.
