Default 6 speed help

Background: I purchased a 6-speed from Ben that has known issues. It was discussed in a thread from Oct 2008 on this board. It has no shifter or control case housing. It suffered from not being able to go into first gear.

I want to know what I should be able to feel when I manipulate the control rod lever. As is, when I push/pull the control rod end (attached to control rod lever) and rotate the shaft I do not get any feel of gears engaging. I try to gimmick the gear positions. I thought that I should be able to put the transmission in and out of gear. It also has no clutch release bearing or clutch release fork attached. I will readily admit that my trans. knowledge is minimal. I have the six speed Mazda repair manual, and the trans. is out of the car. I want to asses the overall situation before I start buying a ton of stuff to attempt a trans repair.

Take it apart and look at the internals, thats the only smart option. Especially since you have the 6spd repair manual...

either the forks/sliders are sliding, or they're in pieces in the case.

What do you mean by "gears engaging"? I seriously doubt you can feel the fork/slider/hubs moving and locking without cracking the case and looking. Obviously it needs surgery so just take it apart. Have fun.

Well, that's good to know that I wouldn't be able to feel the gear engagement. The previous owner to Ben said that 2nd through 6th and reverse worked fine. I would like t just take the front and rear pieces off the trans and leave the center with the gears intact, but it appears you have to dissemble everything to get the front of the case off. I didn't want to get part way through and realize that I need a number of really expensive specialty tools. I guess I'll have to take a stab at it.

I'll keep that in mind. I've found some answers to my questions last night when I pulled the rear part of the case apart. Someone was lied to. Whether it's me or the previous owner. If the original owner said that 2-6 and R worked perfectly, then that was before they went into the case and screwed with things. There are pieces missing, and it was put back together the best they could remember. I bet they didn't have the rebuild manual. The job so far is much less daunting than I expected. You really just follow the repair manual step by step. It doesn't seem to leave anything out. We'll see how much the replacement parts will cost.

Default Take a look at this gear

I noticed the 6th gear clutch hub has a chip on one of the gears. It doesn't look like it will cause any problems, but if people think it absolutely needs to be replaced then please chime in.

My budget six speed is already up to 300 in parts without this gear.

Does anyone know what can be used in place of the Mazda gear puller? Nothing fro the rental tools at autozone would work I'm going to check harbor freight at lunch

Sorry, I took the image with my phone on the way out of the house. save it and open with irfanview, then try to lighten it. I'll see what I can do about a new image.
