random question: are you controlling the vics switchover?

Jeffbucc 06-17-2015 09:43 AM

I have it wired into the DIYBOB on my MS3x but I have no clue if it is functioning properly. Probably should data log to see if it is kicking in or not.

hornetball 06-17-2015 10:02 AM

Jeff, this was my experience using an MS1-based MSPNP for VICS:

https://www.miataturbo.net/mspnp-55/...in-vics-78874/

Datalogging works great and led to my discovering a "feature" of the MS1 software (see the thread).

I also did a physical observation test of the VICS actuator. When I did that, I lowered the setpoint (2K RPM IIRC) and then went around and manipulated the throttle under the hood. Above the setpoint, the VICS arm should be in its resting position (same place as when the car is off). Below the setpoint, the VICS arm should be in its actuated position.

Set to 2000rpm. Look at butterflys. Blip throttle by hand. Do butterflys move? It's working.

Set to 5500rpm until you hit the dyno again. You want two dyno graphs, one with it set to ~1000rpm, one with it set to ~10,000rpm (always off, always on). In my experience, N/A motors like it open(closed?!) between 3500 and 5500rpm. Turbo motors don't really seem to care...

18psi 06-17-2015 10:15 AM

yep 5500 seems to be the sweet spot. the valves should be closed below and open above. default "resting" position is open. vacuum should close them as soon as you start the car
iirc

You know, I've always wondered if it even does much with a car that has a turbo. Wouldn't a square top manifold suit it a little better?

hornetball 06-17-2015 10:32 AM

No, doesn't do much on a boosted car -- better off with a squaretop (or just turn up the boost a little).

18psi 06-17-2015 10:37 AM

Yeah the flattop is likely the best oem option.
I really don't know about if it matters in boost, I keep hearing conflicting info

Seriously awesome prices on those lately

aidandj 06-17-2015 12:32 PM

Send me your VICS after you buy the flattop. You have my address :)

Jeffbucc 06-17-2015 12:35 PM

I'm pretty happy with my manifold thank you!

Plus I'd not like to go through the hassle of Powdercoating it, buying gaskets, running vacuum lines, yadda yadda for a tiny inestimable gain.

Sorry y'all maybe another week you'll get to see the next episode in how Jeff goes overboard.

Nah, look at the finish? It does not match the valve cover! I don't know how you sleep at night.

Don't bother him with this oem peasantry. He's going IRTB's
