So that puts us pretty much up until today. For the turbo build, my goal is to be around 200 whp, or just a bit over. Enough power to make the car decently quick, but not enough to blow everything up :)
After some research, I decided to go with a T25 from an sr20DET. Pairing that with a Flyin' Miata cast manifold. Those are the only 2 big parts that I've acquired to far. 460cc red top rx7 injectors are in the mail right now - I'll be sending them off to Witch Hunter for cleaning and flow testing when I get them. As far as more parts I will buying in the near future, I'm looking at Megasquirt PNP2 and a CX racing intercooler. More updates soon hopefully!! https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1372257032 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1372257032 |
Nice.
The kosei wheels were 100000000000000% better than the meshies. Love the WRX. Good call on the fm log and sr turbo. Simple yet effective. Clean car. |

The paint is in pretty decent shape, but it does have some really nasty rocker rust. My plan is to have that taken care of with replacement rockers over the winter when the car isn't being driven. |
Consider a MS3 Basic from Reverent instead of an MSPNP2 as an option.
Welcome. |

Welcome. The car is going to be tuned by Matt of Wicked Innovation. He's one of the most reputable tuners in New England, and a friend of mine. |
Where the heck are you auto-xing. That doesnt look like devens.

Hey this is a cool build! I just bought 460's too, plus just got the SR20 brainwave... Don't yell at me if I copy this build too much ;)
What downpour are you planning on? The FM one or are you going custom? |

Ah I see. I'm trying to avoid the whole custom downpipe bit, as there are not many good fab shops locally... looks like I'll just have to keep hunting for a used BEGI/FM downpipe.

I've been slacking on updates!
Picked up an older FMII FMIC setup with the piping https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1377697091 APS BOV https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1377697091 Got my injectors cleaned with great results :) https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1377697091 Stage 2 Comp Clutch https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1377697091 Making good use of the car this summer! https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1377697091 Did another couple autocrosses as well. The car ran great, and I put down some of my best times so far. Me and a couple of friends started to tear things down last night. Got the intake out, as well as the header/downpipe/cat/EGR. All of the header nuts came off smoothly (thank god!) I don't have a ton of time left this week to work on the car, so I may take on some of the smaller tasks, like the injectors, or MegaSquirt, as well as cleaning up that nasty engine bay! https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1377697091 |
Cool update, I love the Kayak transportation! I wish I had pictures of some of the things I've stuffed in my car.

Good luck with them, and the build. Cheers  |
Try Goodwinracing for some deep dish raceable and light wheels, like my Konig wideopens or the flatouts. They're cheap, but I hear they were sued by Ray's and Enkei and might not be available for much longer. Granted you have other purchase priorities right now, but if you sell the meshes on CR you might even come out on top.
I'd also suggest selling the FM intercooler and finding one without all the kinks, bends, and couplers in the piping. Either look at making a simpler design yourself, or look into buying their new one piece silicone hoses. Good build so far though, you're basically copying my build, except with a 1.8. Should be good! |

Should be good! I went with the FMII intercooler for now for the sake of having a kit that I could drop into the car (more or less) for a cheap price. I got a steal for the kit actually - I basically just paid for the FM core and got the piping for free. Once I save up some more money after I get the car running, I'm definitely going to look at having better piping fabbed together, or go with the FM silicone pipes for less points of failure and more direct air flow. Thanks for the compliments! |
Nice build. I'm boost my 94 Montego as well. Subscribed.
|
If you check out my build thread (https://www.miataturbo.net/build-thr...attempt-66942/) I used the same intercooler and ran the piping over the top of the radiator. Depending on the size of your radiators expansion tank, you might be able to avoid the S bend before the throttle body. A friend of mine uses the same intercooler on his track car and he's pushing over 350whp on a GT3071.

Had a busy weekend moving the girlfriend into a new apartment. Got a spare half hour tonight to do the injectors. Old injectors out https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1378175652 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1378175652 New injectors in! https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1378175652 |

Had a solid few hours to work on the car after work today.
Got the fender lines out and bumper off in preparation for the FMIC install. At first glance, it looks like I'm going to end up removing my air conditioning to fit everything. I'm also thinking about deleting my power steering. Clean up that engine bay all nice like :) https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1378437744 Center console and shifter out https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1378437744 Tranny oil drained, and driveshaft removed. Don't mind my excessive use of PB blaster and rusted heat shields. Welcome to New England! https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1378437744 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1378437744 And the forever expanding pile-o-parts sans bumper https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1378437744 Hopefully will be separating the transmission bellhousing tomorrow for the clutch install. |

Unfortunately, I was travelling this weekend, so didn't make any progress. But last night I was able to remove all of the transmission bellhousing bolts! Some were a pain, but it actually wasn't as bad as I was expecting. At one point I think I had a breaker bar attached to a 10" extension, attached to a universal joint, attached to a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter, attached to a 12mm.
I removed my CAS, heater core hose, and coil pack to get to the top 2 bolts. I'm very glad I did this. I think my CAS was leaking a little bit (sarcasm, see the picture below). The engine side of the heater core hose was also about to pop. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1378821220 Should be dropping the tranny tonight. The speedometer cable is very corroded to the tranny case. Going to try to get it off with some vice grips. |
4 Attachment(s)
Finally got the transmission out last night. Honestly, the hardest part was the 4 electrical connections on top on the tranny. Had to use one of those dental mirrors to see what was going on up there.
She's out! The fluid in the bottom of the bellhousing is coolant that dripped down when I took off the heater core hose yesterday. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1378907389 My clutch was slipping a bit during autocross, so I was very surprised to see a DK/Exedy clutch in there when I pulled it out. It must be glazed over. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1378907389 The rear main seal is actually in good shape. I bought some engine degreaser to take care of the nasty-ness left behind from the leaky CAS. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1378907389 My front fenders were very rusted at the bottom. I pulled them off and was pleasantly surprised to see there were no holes through the rockers underneath, just surface rust. The car is going in for a lot of body work once I get this build done. Here she sits, so angry >:( https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1378907389 |
Cool build, makes me so happy not to live where you live. So much rust and oxidization on that thing. Crazy...

Hey hey I like that - Is that mounted in your trunk?
Any advice on the install? I'm doing my MS3X this week. |
That's behind the passenger seat I believe, the stock location for 94+ ecus AFAIK.

The install honestly only took about a half hour or so. Take out the passenger seat, it makes it easier to drill. Use a flathead to get the ECU harnesses out of the old ECU. Try to find a buddy to help you pass the MAP line through the firewall, it'll make things much easier. I had roughly a foot or so of extra line too. |
Following this closely as I also have a MSPNP and a SR20DET T25 I plan on turbo'n the car with.
<- 94 miata with 99 engine though. Build looks good, looking forward to more pics of progress. |

Progress has kind of been on pause since GTA V came out.. However, I dropped off my flywheel to be resurfaced at a local machine shop, and put in some orders at Rosenthal and Begi including new shifter boots, gear oil, o rings, gaskets, and turbo fittings and parts. All of those parts should be in this week, and then I can get moving again. I received my oil and coolant lines from Abe at Artech, and they look great! |

Compressor or exhaust housing?
Looking at mine the compressor would be a pain with the snap ring but the exhaust is bolted on and in my experience they almost always could use a rap with a rubber mallet to encourage them to break free |

I got 3 off. One didn't budge, but is in good shape anyways, but the 5th is stripped, so I can't get any nuts on it. Vice grips were slipping. May need to get creative with that one. |
Normally when I get one that is stripped like that I weld a nut to it and try to work it out that way with lots of PB and Mapp gas
|
mount it in a vise, heat the turbine housing with a torch and then get a small pipe wrench on the stud.
it helps to tap the housing with a hammer once its heated as well to relieve some stresses and loosen the corrosion. |

I used a heat gun and tapped on the top of the stud. Being careful to not put too much preassure as to break it. I broke 1 out of 3 stuck and it was the first one. I heated and tapped for several cycles before it broke free. The key was patience. Good luck!

If worse comes to worst most machine/automotive places will remove or drill out broken studs for cheap i.e. ~$10
|
You can take the whole thing to the machine shop and say call me when it is finished.

I degreased and cleaned up the transmission a bit yesterday. It's by no means spectacular, but its better. I also got the clutch installed, and also started working on the oil feed. I got the new fitting in the block, with the brass T, and the oil pressure sending unit. I'm waiting to install the feed line until I get the transmission back in, because I want to make sure I route it around the bellhousing correctly. Hopefully getting the transmission back in tonight. Pics! Didn't bother taking any of the oil feed, because I'm not a contortionist. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1380202706 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1380202706 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1380202706 |

Transmission and driveshaft are back in! So glad that's over with. It feels like the world's been lifted off my shoulders and I can finally proceed with getting the turbo in there (after I get it clocked..)
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1380287050 |
Nice! Got the hard part done.
Keep up the work. I'm itching to get my T25 on the car but the newborn baby girl is taking precedence right now |
So after 2 hours of expensive labor at the shop, they still could not get the turbo clocked. Since there is some shaft play anyway, I may need to pick up a newer turbo.
This is putting a damper on my plans :( |
Here's how I did it: separate the turbo first, using ~1/2" nuts and bolts as tiny bottle jacks. Then install the turbine housing. Then with a level I installed the rebuilt CHRA into the turbine housing so the top was level (aka, so was the drain). Then install the compressor housing loosely, rotating until you're happy.
The CHRA will NOT turn in the turbine housing easily, it's best to take it out, rotate, and reinsert. Go to gopopshop.com and buy a rebuild kit. It's a good experience. |
Ohhhh, YOU'RE the one that texted me! Hahahah that makes sense. Sorry to hear its not working out so far.

Back at it, finally. Freshly rebuilt turbo from JDS Performance is in the mail.
Did the fuel pump last night https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1381501260 Out with the old, in with the new! And by new, I mean my roommate's fuel pump from his STi! https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1381501260 Started sanding my valve cover for a fresh coat of color-matched Montego :) https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1381501260 Got the CAS back in https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1381501260 I will hopefully have an update with a purdy, clockable turbo soon! |
I HIGHLY recommend you rebuild that turbo after clocking. I know mine was super seized together, i had to apply heat, a BFH, and lots of PB blaster to finally get it clocked. Now the turbo makes a funny noise and I think it may be consuming oil. In the future I'd rebuild it for sure if it's stuck and wont clock easily.

Last week I was travelling to Ireland for work, so no progress was made. However, my turbo came in! I'll have pictures later tonight.
Last night I took care of some smaller things, like getting the shifter back together with the new boots, putting some interior back together, and painted my valve cover. I think it's going to come out pretty nice. I'm going to clear coat it tonight. |

Here's the new turbo, mid clocking process. All 4 of the turbine housing bolts loosened super easy. When I tried to clock it, the compressor housing was spinning (with difficulty, as the snap ring is still in., as opposed to the exhaust housing, like I wanted. Any suggestions?
