Well, sounds like this engine met an unfortunate ending. Duane reported tipping into the throttle at 75 in 6th, and it blew out a giant cloud of white smoke. Dip stick was pushed out. Compression is 160, 155, 0, 175. We're thinking the previous tune did some irreparable damage, and despite my efforts to correct them, it had experienced too much detonation.

Here's the dyno graph from the dyno, on the first run, you can see I gave up after 5,500 as the rich 10:1 (or more) was cutting out the spark.

Finally ended with a tune that was still fairly rich, but was running low 11s. Owner was discussing adding a square top and catless downpipe, so I didn't go too aggressive. Timing was 16-18 degrees in boost, only 15 by red line.

I'm also attaching the .msq and datalog of the above dyno run to see if y'all see anything that might of indicated an issue.

I have a built shortblock in stock that would solve that problem. Mail me that one and a check for ~$3k+ship and I'll mail you mine. I can even put an MSM pan on it if you want (there's no pan/pump on it right now, just a rotating assembly).

That's probably exactly what I would do Savington, however I'm not sure the owner has that money right now. He has offered the car for sale at $8k, and I really wish I had $8k laying around to take him up on that offer.

6uls/11.75 brakes/BBFW bar/mspro/FM intake/FM intercooler/FM downpipe/FM exhaust and other things would pay for that.

Duane G. here. Well, finances and lack of experience led to a long down time after the engine did a melt down. Engine has been rebuilt with Supertech pistons. New turbo manifold with 2871 turbo. Coolant reroute. Singular Hood Vents. 2000 Intake and every other mod I could think of to keep things cool and long running while producing more horsepower. Car is in final tuning stage by local racer David D. He's currently running his own Miata at 345hp. I'm hoping to settle in around 250hp/275hp.David D. thinks I should shoot for more but he breaks things. I missed an entire Summer of driving it and at times wanted to sell as-is and walk away from it but honestly, I feel honor bound to'Josh and MikeV and his family to see this through.
I had the engine rebuilt by M.Lindvig at Lindvig Machine Shop and had the Head rebuilt by Keller Machine Shop. Only the very best components went into the rebuild. I can only hope I didn't screw the little things up putting all of the exterior components back together. The engine sounds like a whole new creation and pulls like a horse. I'm old...so I hired a friend who is also a mechanic to help me pull the engine out and reinstall it but I know I frustrated him with my uncertainties as I struggled to figure out the connections and new locations for underhood components due too the changes I made. I am clearly not a mechanic.
Josh, I'll let you know how it irons out here after the tuning is complete. I, like MikeV., am indebted to you for restoring it and will always consider this car your creation. Thank you.

Glad to hear it's back together, and thank you for the kind words. I'm always leary of engine builders. Reputation or not, I always feel like my engine would be the one built on a bad day by the intern's interns. Add to that the complication of cylinder bore, piston ring gap, etc. I'm not an expert builder by any means, but I at least I spent no money on assembly and only have me to blame. And when one goes south (like yours Duane), it's an amateur build on stock pistons so it's not a huge surprise if and when they go, especially after the abuse that happened between my possession and your ownership. I'm finding that the MSM turbos do NOT like to be pushed above ~210. I'm glad you upgraded to a different turbo and manifold, and now have the safety of the ST pistons.

Can't wait to see the dyno graph! Should be much improved.
