Forgot to mention the used motor I bought off m.net has a damaged head. Seller is no longer responding, takes no responsibility, neat. Careful buying anything off this guy MX-5 Miata Forum
I only asked for $100 back.... https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440858377 |

Damn, that head looks like it hit a wall.

Will zip ties fix it?

Got the motor in, fired the car up (jumped it), and smoke started pouring out from behind the passenger seat. The ms3x was putting on a smoke show.
Took it apart https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1444049757 Ordered the two new capacitors and a new diode, and my buddy stopped by with his soldering gear to help me out. Parts replaced, and cleaned up. Before the ecu went back in, I swapped my 96 alternator back on the motor. I used the 99 alternator since it looked newer, guess there more current output with the 99, might be the reason for the pop in the ecu. Didn't want to risk it again, old alt it is. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1444049757 My friend who's been helping me with the swap stopped by and helped me get the car running better. Timing was advanced a lot, probably due to the key way damage on the old motor. Anyways, out of the garage on its own power, hasn't moved in 2.5 months. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1444049757 Went out for a quick drive, everything seems decent. Taking it easy for the head gasket to heat cycle a bit before I hit more boost. Curious if I'll feel any power difference now that the car has proper timing setup. |
99-up alternator has no internal regulator. It makes unlimited volts until all your components are charcoal. The ECU regulates the alternator voltage on 99-up. The '97-down alternators are internally regulated.
Miatas make poor drift cars because of their low polar moment of inertia. It is one of the things that makes them great road racing cars. It is more difficult to hold a drift angle with a Miata than many other choices due to physics. You picked a hard road. |

Lol. Ohtsu fp7000 (spiritual Falken 512) vs Yokohama S drive. Both 205/50/15 on a 10" wheel. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1444146344 S drives fill out the fender better, happier with the way things look now out back. |

Serious question; do you ever have issues with the tire escaping the rim?
I am unaccustomed to such activities. |
:hatecat: That tire/wheel size is incorrect. :hatecat:

I am surprised by the this, thank you.
Onother serious question, if you don't mind. What do you actually look for in tires for a drift event? It seems like a tire with good grip like, let's say an rs3, would be counter productive. Yet I still see "drifters" using good tires. Also, is the point of stretching tires to reduce the contact patch? I want to believe there is science behind this. |

Using good tires is probably a traction thing, improved front grip, power, and again predictability, as well as how the tire burns. Sometimes the cheaper tires chunk, or begin to delaminate. Usually not an issue for me since my car doesn't really make a ton of power, so I can stick to the cheaper stuff. On a side note, people really get emotionally invested over a little tire stretch and low cars on this forum huh? Guess it's better to vent those frustrations than lose anymore sleep. |
Speed is also a concern with drifting. Even though it's a "sport" based on looks and style points, corner entry is a metric, which would be increased with more overall grip.

Brought the car to Staggered. Potato phone pic, camera battery was dead.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1444742542 Car's running pretty well, fingers crossed. Still having some issues starting, sometimes it starts right up, other times it takes a few tries (2-3). |

Just read this whole thread. Besides the drift haters it's been a good thread. You defended yourself well but I just think there are some people that want everybody to do the same things as them. Keep it up and stay sideways.

Hard dog hidden hitch in
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446731654 Hitch removed https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446731654 Harbor Freight 42708 trailer, 8" wheels, 40" x 49". https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446731654 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446731654 Car from the front with the trailer hooked up Attachment 233664 My dad's built a few utility trailers, so he welded the HF trailer to stiffen it up (it's a bolt together trailer), and built the basket for the trailer. The trailer is painted with black bed liner. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446731654 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446731654 Should make things a lot easier getting tires to events. And finally, I had to order the Hopkins 43755 plug and play trailer harness kit. An attempt was made to just splice into the rear lights for the trailer harness but couldn't get all the lights to work. Had the running lights and blinkers going, no brake lights. Hoping this kit solves my problems. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...L._SL1500_.jpg |

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446866255 The kit plugs right into the tail lights, tail light plugs into the kit https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446866255 Hid the converter box behind the carpet, and ran the plug out, trailer lights work perfectly. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1446866255 The Hopkins kit is the way to go, does not need to be hooked up to the battery. Simple, plug and play. |

This thread is great. Normally I'd be right there with everyone else nay-saying drifting. But You've kept your composure and trucked on. Good on you. I actually like your car even though it's not entirely my taste. I can respect something well done even if it's not what I would do.
Also, people picking you apart for your wheel game is odd. You have nice legit wheels, sure they cost a lot but it's rather see that then all the terrible drift missle fagbois in slammed miatas rolling around on xxrs. :bigtu: My only gripe is get a rollbar mang! |

Thanks, I don't mind the hazing, it's been pretty fun actually.
And I have a harddog roll bar, that's what I mounted my gopro to. That's the reason why I got the roll bar in the first place. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1447789425 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1447789425 |
I didn't even notice the flares were carbon until now haha. It looks like you are having a good time and thats what counts at the end of the day. Not bad for a dorifto :p. Secretly I'm jealous of your going car too

Had to buy this, stock pcv valve wasn't cutting it at the event in extended periods of boost. Had oil spitting out of the valve cover breather filter.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1448336476 If this doesn't fix it, I may have to consider a catch can setup or something. |
When I used the stronger pcv valve before my rebuild it cut down a great deal of oil usage on my car.

Winter is getting closer, and the seasons come to an end. Time to start driving in the basement.
If anyone plays the game and wants to join a weekly league, I set one up with a buddy. Search for the league name "Drift Faction" (two words). |
Driving season is just getting nice here. Enjoy the outdoors!

Old photo re-edit.
Before https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1458571270 After https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1458571128 Got some time on my buddies lift today. Buttoned up a few loose ends from last year, primarily the under tray. Intercooler and piping made this fun. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1458571128 Oil temps were climbing a bit after a few laps drifting at the last event without the under tray and the plastic shroud in the bumper. So hopefully this helps direct some more air flow through the radiator to keep temps in check. I might cut the hood to let some hot air out as well. |
Looks like fun. I love black NAs.
Whereabouts in Western MA are you located brah? |

Installed a Mishimoto catch can, not the prettiest setup, but it should function. I'm going to try finding a 90 degree fitting for the outlet on the catch to clean things up. Previously I was just running a breather filter off the valve cover.
