Drift car from MA

11 Attachment(s)
My name is Rob, I'm 28, from Western Mass and I have a 96 miata. I bought a dog cat and the car a little over 4 years ago.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1426945593

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1426945593

This is what the car looks like currently
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1426945593

This is my dog cat currently. The cat enjoys long walks and hiking in the woods, weird cat.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1426945593

I got into drifting 2 years ago, last event I went to was in Oct 2014 at NHMS
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3933/...fb09277f_h.jpg

Picked up a used FM turbo kit after that event, and put it in. Running MS3x, had some issues getting it going, but Braineack helped me get things sorted.
Attachment 233666

The car runs and drives

I built a shed 3 years ago to store the car in every winter.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1426945593

And finally, I also have a motorcycle. 2002 SV650, I've had it for 8 years now.
https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2862/...f38b24cd_h.jpg

I still need a few things for the car, but that's the gist of it.

Braineack 03-22-2015 01:27 AM

So why drift?

I enjoy myself more drifting than I ever did at autox event, and I can't afford track days. Local tracks aren't cheap around here, maybe things will change with Palmer opening up.

pdexta 03-24-2015 02:07 PM

Welcome to the site. The car is a little outside the norm around here, but I like it. Are those real Work's? I wouldn't want to bend those things up on a wall.

Thank you. Yes, they are Work Meister S1's. I have Rota Grid V's for track use.

Things learned :

1) Love your car

2) Personally saddened it gets drifted
2.1) I understand you're enjoying your car so I can't hate the drift.
2.2) You clearly have demonstrated you know what you're doing.

3) You take pictures with a camera, not a potato. +1

4) Welcome!

robertw 03-24-2015 05:59 PM

1. Thank you.
2. It happens.
__2.1. Thank you for understanding.
__2.2. My friend Dragula (MT member) held my hand through the turbo'ing, and has helped with a ton of work on the car over the years. I am in his debt, and I gave him a 1UZ.
3. I try to use a camera whenever I can.
4. It's good to finally join up.

turbofan 03-24-2015 06:13 PM

I've never seen the buell front shield on an SV. I like it. But I'd like a Buell more.

Can't hate on the drift for the reasons stated above, can hate on the fat person stance.

^^ This.

I dig the black NA. Do not agree with wheels/suspension setup. But first pole swipe may give me  Pretty clean for what it is. :fael:

Been there, done that unfortunately. As quickly as I gained confidence, it was just as quickly taken away. Almost 2 years ago.

Replaced the upper / lower arms, and spindle. The wheel was straightened at a friends shop, ordered a new wheel, and flare.
Attachment 184240

Body work was done a month or so after I damaged the car, but it took 3 months for the replacement wheel to get delivered.

After I got the car back together my friend snapped this shot.

And the tattered wheel is now a whoopee cushion holder in my office. So that's a bonus, I needed one of those.

I had that keyboard. Destroyed it.

The space bar isn't very robust, keys pop out when you hit them with a tigerpaw. I have the same case too, that's actually really good if you stuff it with fans. Is that the microsoft xbox controller dongle?

It's a good budget case. That is the logitech dongle for the speakers, volume control and power button. I'm dongling with my HTPC, wireless 360 controller and headset. Jerk off base I'm use a wired 360 controller.

Buell XB12s windscreen, headlight, and headlight grill. That was the first and last time I ever stepped foot in a Harley dealership.

Are those street triple lights on yours?

adamiata 03-25-2015 08:12 AM

Aztec8 lights and brackets with a Vapor digital gauge pod.

I ordered my flyscreen and turn signals online, just I wouldn't have to go to the Harley dealership.

Ditto, do you have an issues seeing your gauge lights during the day? I think I need to swap in LED bulbs because I can barely see mine.

Bummed the factory instrumentation exploded when I wrecked the bike. I wanted to replace the OEM gauges but they were incredibly expensive at the time, probably even worse now.

I have a build thread on SVrider, some good bike carnage pics from the wreck there as well 02 SV650 rebuild, gsxr swap and more - Suzuki SV650 Forum: SV650, SV1000, Gladius Forums

Consistency is a good thing. The weird thing is I never trashed my toys as a kid, but at one point or another I've ruined all my current toys. I'm regressing.

Braineack 03-25-2015 09:11 AM

you can't have a drift car without spending tons of money on appearance mods and then destroying it all with a guardrail.

that's like the whole point of drifting.

Yeah that's generally how it is at the events, drifters love them wall taps.

I like my car looking decent, so I try to avoid destroying it into things. I guess I'm not as cool as the cool drifters.

Not that I remember, but I haven't been riding it much lately because kids. Mine was originally an S-model that came with cracked fairings, hence the naked swap. The S-gauge pod is huge and stuck out way past the Buell flyscreen, so I went with the Vapor unit.

I'm thinking about selling the bike to fund my turbo, but I really don't know what it's worth.

Car runs better now. Still takes some cranking and pedal work to get started. Really hates starting after running, heat soak's confusing the MS.

Maybe, but I like the way the interior looks atm so not sure I'd want to muck that up with a handbrake on the dash. I'll replace this old cable with a fresh one soon.

So what you mean is you choose not to spend your money on track days.

It's like people saying they can't afford to buy their own food as they stand there with their new iPhone 6 Plus with 10GB monthly data to stream their online music subscription to their new Beats headphones.

triple j 07-11-2015 03:57 PM

Its not a drifter without a hydro there very much needed, mines a mk2 and its fitted where the cigarette lighter was.
And for the people that disagree on miata drift cars, it's not your car so why worry.

robertw 07-11-2015 05:38 PM

I bought the wheels because they look nice and I liked them. I can do 2 drift events for the price of one track day. I prefer driving more for less.

Also, you care a little too much about how I spend my money.

p.s. I have unlimited data on my phone.

turbofan 07-11-2015 06:31 PM

IDGAF how you spend your money. Saying you 'can't afford' track days is BS, you simply choose to spend the money elsewhere.

Yes, I'm blasting you for semantics, because I'm grumpy and bored at work.

Chilicharger665 07-11-2015 11:27 PM

The amount of money you waste on burning through tires would easily make up for a track days cost. You're a excuse-making, figure-skater.

I burn a set of cheap Chinese tires, vs heat cycling tires that cost twice as much per tire if not more. #guyzstopcrying

Efini~FC3S 07-12-2015 01:05 PM

WE'RE NOT GOING TO STOP CRYING!!!

Your wasting your money drifting.

You should be spending your money building a 949 Racing Supermiata clone so you can dominate people in TTE (NASA time trial for you driftorz).

How dare you come to this website and do anything else?

I had a set of 3 piece Work wheels on one of my previous cars, back when it was cool. In 2006. 6UL or die

turbofan 07-12-2015 05:44 PM

My track tires are $68 apiece and should last through 10 ish track days plus street miles. At 250+ whp.

Car has some good crank pulley wobble. New pulley came in, still wobbles. Just ordered a new pulley boss since the key way on the crank looks ok'ish I think. Maybe with some luck a new pulley boss will fix it, if not the car goes in the shed till next year.

robertw 07-28-2015 09:09 AM

What it looks like happened is the previous owner had a timing belt replaced, and whoever did the work didn't tighten the bolt to spec. Maybe they didn't use any loctite, used the same bolt, or didn't torque the bolt to spec. Regardless, the bolt got loose, pulley began to wobble on the crank, and the key way widened.

Options, make an offset key, jb weld fix, replace the motor, rebuild mine. Bang for the buck and time is getting an offset key made. That could potentially last me a while until I feel like rebuilding this motor or another motor. JB weld fix leaves me a bit skeptical, and full rebuild / motor swapping right now can't happen, too busy with the baby.

TL;DR - Problems, can't have nice things.

Baby face palm

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438088986

triple j 07-28-2015 09:18 AM

Thats a tricky fix, jb weld probably won't last pissing time, would it be possible to tak weld the key in place, bit of a botch job but it beets striping the engine down.

robertw 07-28-2015 10:04 AM

I misspoke, when I said jb weld, I meant the loctite 660 stuff. Anyways, not sure how reliable that fix is, or how long it lasts. I'm having some issues tracking down a spare motor locally so this might be a temp thing, motor build over the winter or something.
