^^ Good to see JimmiO before his incident :(

Are you just using adapters for the R33 wheels??

What's your steering setup look like now on the miata?

If I recall correctly from earlier you had the SPL inner/outer tie rods. Do you still have that? Have you moved to a cut steering knuckle or anything yet?

Front, stock inners, M edition outers, tie rod spacer, stock knuckles. Rear SPL upper control arms.

No adapters, had new hubs drilled to 5x114.3, and the R33 wheel hub bore bored out to the larger E36 hub diameter.

The season started back up, video and photo dump.

I've followed this thread for a while as i have similar plans. I'm curious about cooling. Right now I'm on a stock rad w/o the AC fan due to IC piping. Looking to change the Ic piping and upgrade the cooling all around but am curious what your experience was like with your various setups over the years?

Obviously it would be ideal to have a car that can hot lap all day but $$$ is always a factor due to other priorities.

Keep shredding man!

Car still gets really hot, but I think that's just drifting. Sustained high rpm sideways driving, and not getting enough airflow through the radiator like road racing. I can't hot lap drifting unless it's a high speed road course with some straights to help cool the car off. The track in the video a lot of drift cars struggle to stay cool. When I took the car to palmer motorsports park and lime rock, I could do a 30 min hot lap grip driving session and only start overheating during the last few laps. That was before the hood vents.

From the drift event in the video I posted.

Took the M3 to a SCCA Track Night in America at Thompson Speedway. Fun change of pace, car needs a few things like a fuel starvation kit, apparently some e36's don't like sustained right handers with half a tank of fuel. Also need a diff breather and a shifter kit with a 2nd gear lock out...$$$$.

Fireindc 10-01-2020 03:20 PM

Looks like a blast. I've been wanting to track my daily (323 GTX) as well and I've been slowly prepping it to hopefully hit some events next year.

Do you ever take the miata to timeattack/track days? Would love to see it ripping around, I bet with some minor tweaks it would be a real threat on the road course.

I've taken the miata to a few track nights, raised it and put some hoosiers on. It's a lot quicker on the road course than the bmw, I just got sick making adjustments to it get it ready for a grip driving event during drift season. You should def check out a Track Night, really well run, fun events.

Another drift event. After 8 years of drifting, and 6 years of drifting with the car turbo'd, the transmission (NA 5 speed) finally bit the dust. Lost 2nd gear.

Carnage photos of transmission for everyone's viewing pleasure.

This came out of the drain plug, good start lol

Ordered a new ACT Streetlite flywheel, my buddy is giving me his gently used FM Level 1 clutch and ordered a new pilot bearing. Swapping in a NB 5 speed, hoping that trans lasts me as long as this one did.

Nice update! My 5 speed has been going strong as well, lots of track time and DD use at a power level known to eat 5 speeds. Some just seem to hold up.

You going back in with a 5 speed or changing to a 6?

robertw 07-29-2021 12:56 PM

I have another 5 speed to swap in, so I'm going to give it a shot and see how long it lasts. My buddy has a 6 speed swapped in his car and says it's def not as smooth as his 5 speed was so for now I'd prefer a 5 speed based on that.

But if this 5 speed doesn't last I'll probably look for a 6 speed. I haven't looked into the 6 speed swap as far as gear ratios to see how different it would be for me on track as well.

Side by side flywheels. Old one looks worse out of the car, pilot bearing was very rough. Didn't expect the pilot bearing to have failed this quickly, not many miles put on the car.

Got the transmission back in the car, learned the NB 5 speed has 2 pins in the turret vs the NA 5 speeds 1 pin at the front.

Attachment 233523

Called my buddy to see if he had a spare NB shifter, fortunately he did. Unfortunately the turret boot was destroyed, so I had to get the boot off my NA shifter. That was a huge pita.

Attachment 233524

Used my old NA antenna to pull the boot up onto the shifter, after what feels like an hour I got the boot off.

Attachment 233525
Attachment 233526

Had to replace the boot on one of my axles, also had a pretty good clunk. Found a decently worn spot on the star nut, flipped it, and put it back on. Hoping the ball stays off that spot and the clunk is gone.

Axle back together.

Lately, I've been struggling with shifting from 2nd to 3rd at higher rpm's. This wasn't always an issue, but it's been getting more difficult as time has gone on. I'm thinking it could be the MazdaComp motor mounts getting, they've been on the car for about 7-8 years. The rubber mazda comps have seen a lot of clutch kicks, hard on throttle and off throttle, and the car being thrown around back and forth throughout those years.

Anyways, picked up the SuperMiata motor mounts. I have poly diff mounts on the car already, so hoping these help out as well.

It's interesting to see how much you improved over time, good work. The GTO is a very capable car in the twisties. The M3 is regrets.

Cool GTO! A few dudes bring those out to our time attack events and they have always impressed me in that regard. Not quite as much as a new Camaro, but still impressive!

robertw 01-31-2023 08:04 AM

Just finished swapping rear CTS-V Brembo’s onto the GTO. Car came with Brembo’s on the front so did the rear swap to match and balance the car out. I need to work on the Miata but the GTO’s been too much of a distraction atm.
