Fowler's turbo build

34 Attachment(s)
It has been nearly 6 months since I have been accumulating parts to start my build. Last year I had sold off my NB to pursue some racing dreams but that didn't end up to well. After dreading selling my car I wanted another toy to build so I decided to go with a Foxbody Mustang. After realizing how dumb I was I turned around and sold it and began my search for another miata. Well in March I had picked up a cheap 93 with a 96 swap and hardtop.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1344914864

Only pic I had of my NB before the upgrades and selling

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1344914864

I got a great deal on the car so I decided to roll with it and eventually do a turbo build. The interior was not to shabby, the clean MazdaSpeed Miata seats made the ride much more relaxing. Not knowing the current miles on the 1.8 I decided to "freshen up" my engine and did a complete rebuild with forged rods. Took me about 9 hours to disassemble, clean and rebuild the engine in my garage.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1344914864https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1344914864

I decided to get myself a new steering wheel. I went with a NRG wheel with a Works Bell quick release. I love the new feel and sturdiness of the steering!

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1344914864

After this point I put together a list on what I wanted for my turbo build. I got some advice from Hustler and decided to go his route, talk to Abe with ARTech and Dimitris for my MS2.

I started talking with Abe from ARTech and had him suggest a full build for me. We decided to do his manifold, downpipe, 3" exhaust along with his turbo lines. He suggested I start with a T25 and work my way up to a T28 later down the line. Must I say his setup turned out magnificent!

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1344914864
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1344914864

Then I got with Reverant and had a enhanced MS2 built for the brain. This baby showed up a few weeks ago!

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1344914864

After gathering these parts I decided it was time to do my install, so I went to a buddies shop and we got after it!

There are many things I did not take pictures of over these past 6 months. I had some BC Racing Coilovers installed that I got cheappp from a friend along with my steering wheel and a few other odd end things. I have a lot more pictures to take of my setup and hope to keep this updated as much as possible. For now, I learn to tune. Wish me luck!

18psi 08-13-2012 11:38 PM

GLORIOUS beginning. Quality parts. Good stuff

FowlerMotorsports 08-13-2012 11:53 PM

Thanks! My car will be nowhere near as nice as most builds on here (including yours Vlad) but for the price I got this baby I can not complain.

Went ahead and spent the money to get the parts I wanted, learned the hard way when buying junk so I went all out. I can always find me a new donor to swap my parts to in the long run once I get more familiar with these cars and tuning.

Golferluke 08-14-2012 11:37 PM

Looks like a pretty cool build. I'm a little confused about the bedroom picture (giggity) I see a mspnp and what looks a t25g maybe? Also I see transmission fluid but no info on clutch. What did you go with?

FowlerMotorsports 08-14-2012 11:42 PM

Sorry, I figured that would confuse some people. I had bought a shit MS1 from a member and learned my lesson not to buy used electronics. Figured I would cut my losses and have a brand new built MS2.

As for turbo it is a T25 from a SR20DET, as soon as I am more familiar I will try my luck with a SR20 T28 :)

The clutch came installed on the car already, fairly new ACT but I couldn't tell you which one I have. The car is a 93 with 96 swapped 1.8 engine and torsen! Like I said, I couldn't let this deal pass.

18psi 08-15-2012 08:43 AM

I'm a bit curious why you angled your ic the way you did

FowlerMotorsports 08-15-2012 10:00 AM

A/c got in the way to make a flush fit. With the gap I have I still run 190* temps, and that's great with no ducting and the Texas heat of 109* on most days. It looks slick with the bumper on and my new lip, i'll get some pics tonight!

hustler 08-15-2012 10:07 AM

Good job, the car is already superior to mine and anything I've done.

FowlerMotorsports 08-15-2012 10:34 AM

Sarcasm? Cause I wish it was as nice as the green car Hustler. This car needs some work but for the money I have into it I have no complaints. Hopefully tuning gets better, car bogs at 4k rpms but spools to 7psi in no time!

hustler 08-15-2012 10:36 AM

No sarcasm. I've been doing some thinking and I'm probably going to cease tuning cars because I lack the knowledge and experience to do it right. If you can't get it tuned, I'll help you find someone.

FowlerMotorsports 08-15-2012 11:23 AM

That would be great, I definitely will need some help because I have no clue on how these cars are suppose to act. I have a few people that helped out last night and it got better but still not running right. I need to rid of these 460cc rx7 injectors and get me some real ones either now or sometime soon.

mghtymouse380 08-15-2012 11:29 AM

Awesome I will be following this build. I am going to be running the same turbo. You have done quite well so far.

This is one thing I never want to do again.

Why? My cars idle just fine on 580CC RX7 injectors.

FowlerMotorsports 08-15-2012 11:53 AM

hopefully I wont need to swap out my chassis anytime soon! But the real build comes after I get this turbo tuned. 9" 6uls and new paint, thinking the ford mustang sonic blue with black or bronze wheels, may go silver but not quite sure yet. So far I love this car

There are varying degrees of suckage. Run these until you can get ID 750s.

FowlerMotorsports 08-15-2012 12:18 PM

Hmm I heard the evo 650s? Reverant suggested some type of injector I can't remember right now. But I will run these til I make them out, then bigger turbo, injectors, rebuilt engine, depends how horny i get

hustler 08-15-2012 12:21 PM

Probably EV14. I buy injectors that fit the first time, without spacers and shit, because my car won't burn to the ground.

Fireindc 08-15-2012 02:27 PM

Hustler, don't be so emo.

Excellent start OP.

FowlerMotorsports 08-15-2012 03:15 PM

Thanks! I will get some updated pics tonight before I start another tuning journey. Car came along nicely turbo wise

Looks good. Did it bring any mounting hardware?

FowlerMotorsports 08-15-2012 08:46 PM

Yes it came with some screws, I just held it up there and had my body hold on tight while I screwed them in with my electric drill. Turned out great.

Update, car runs amazing! Idles like a champ and runs to 7k rpms with no bogging. I have never driven a turbo miata before, but I am proud to be driving one :) You guys bring so much research and advice here that it takes most of the hassle from building a car or doing tuning. I am not finished yet but I am one satisfied gay right now. I haven't had this big of a smile on my face in such a long long time! :skid:

hustler 08-15-2012 11:46 PM

I feel bad for those poor, little tires.

Golferluke 08-15-2012 11:47 PM

Looks good I like the lip? Any thought about remounting the ic so the brackets are hidden?

FowlerMotorsports 08-16-2012 12:10 AM

Hustler, I don't :)

In time yes, but for now no. Drill some speed holes and call it a day! i'm having way to much fun on the streets, this car is going to get me in trouble

FowlerMotorsports 08-16-2012 10:05 AM

I need some new wheels and tires, anyone have any thoughts on tire/wheel brand and sizes for a daily?

Ryan_G 08-16-2012 10:47 AM

Depends on how much you drive and how much you want to spend on tires yearly. For a DD I would recommend going with a 15x8 wheel with a 205/50/15 tire. The two best wheel choices at that size are the konig flatouts and the 6ULs. Of course if you don't mind DD'ing a tire with a 140 tread wear rating you can always go 6UL 15x9 and run 225/45/15 for maximum grip.

soviet 08-16-2012 10:57 AM

I run TR Motorsports C1 15x8 +20 with 205/50/15 star specs. the whole combo was $960 shipped, mounted balanced from tirerack.

cheep and cheerful.

Looks like I am going with the 6uls and some 205s for my daily! Will be the end of the month til 949 can ship out but oh well.

Guess who payed me a visit today :) 3 hour road trip? I think yes!

Are they broke college students? Because if they aren't they have no excuse :giggle:

The wheels aren't horrible. The weight isn't crazy, but they're only 6" wide which sucks balls. There are options on the market of 15x8 wheels starting from $100/ea

FowlerMotorsports 08-16-2012 11:53 PM

My buddy is, but his father in law just likes the looks of the NB wheel, not the same tire though.

I like TRM wheels or the 6uls, I might aswell spend the money and get the 6uls because those are what I want. 15x8 with 205/50/15, now debating on the tire size!

hornetball 08-17-2012 03:31 AM

If you're still struggling with tuning, I'll be back in town Sunday night. We need to Virtual Dyno your ride!!

6UL's are the way to go. Plenty of room for that BBK which is sure to be your next purchase. The RPF1's I have aren't so good in that regard.

hornetball 08-17-2012 03:31 AM

Oh, BTW, your intercooler mounting looks pretty slick.

Thanks! I will be doing some ducting here soon, temps are fine but it wouldn't hurt anything.

I wont be bothering you the day you get back, but for sure the week/weekend after I will have to come by again so we can play around. I will be in Iowa the 2nd-9th so i'd like to tune before then.

Did a virtual dyno today in 3rd gear just for the hell of it. Running at 7psi does this look right? Specs in my sig

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1345416900

Fireindc 08-19-2012 08:28 PM

Are you dropping boost, or maybe spiking before you level out? WHP dives towards redline, no reason it shouldn't be climbing all the way to redline with your setup.

FowlerMotorsports 08-19-2012 08:31 PM

I think I may be spiking out, boost gauge reads 7psi until I shift gears. The car seems to rev fine til 7000rpms then bogs a little bit, I am still under the learning phase of tuning.

hornetball 08-19-2012 09:56 PM

Your fuel tune definitely needs work. I think your drop-off in HP is coming from going super-rich at the end (below 10:1). I'm home now. Let's try to get together and get that fuel sorted out. It's darn easy.

That said, torque is looking good for 7psi (170 ft-lbs). Your HP will pick right up when we level out your AFR.

FowlerMotorsports 08-19-2012 10:11 PM

That was my main thought. The AFR does look a bit wobbly and where my HP drops is right when I get rich as you stated.

Car pulls very well, I will give you a shot in the drivers seat if you're interested. You don't notice any power loss after 5k when driving, but maybe I will notice a change once a few tables are fixed. Your house is right down the road from my work, I will swing by when you're available one night or even this weekend.

buffon01 08-19-2012 11:07 PM

I'm jelly of the nickel 6uls, or any 6ul at that...

Fowler, could you please upload your tune? I'd like to check something out

G3ML1NGZ 08-20-2012 02:48 AM

where is your boost measured? before or after the intercooler?

Buffon, tune is attached

Reverant 08-20-2012 08:51 AM

Is that with the basemap I included or did you do any autotuning? Nice to see it run!

FowlerMotorsports 08-20-2012 09:55 AM

It is your basemap Autotuned. I was running a little to rich so figured I would just autotune to get a decent tune going

sixshooter 08-20-2012 10:01 AM

Needs a little richness in the middle and a little less up top. What are your target AFRs?

FowlerMotorsports 08-20-2012 10:22 AM

You got me, i'm not sure what I should be aiming for on a FI car

I was just wondering if this might have been your problem with the drop in power up top.

I'm probably the worst MS tuner on here so for gods sake don't copy my stuff cause who knows if its right, Ive just copied other peoples stuff and tweaked it to my car. Anyways with that said I noticed a couple things with your tables. Your afr table only goes to 100kpa (roughly 0 boost) and ramps like crazy (12.5@70kpa across the board), at this rate you'll be running 12.5 cruising on the highway and low 13s at idle. Anyways, heres what my tables look like, (me on top;)) and heres a good thread to check out for afr tables.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-I...2520tables.png

For the second picture I'm comparing the fueling tables in 3d view, you can kinda see how yours looks like a canyon, the areas you've autotuned are ok but if you ever step out of a tuned area your gonna have crazy amounts of fuel
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-1...bles%25202.png

Hopefully this helps some. I dont know, hopefully somebody else can fill in with more technical knowledge on what I'm getting at.

EDIT:
Just out of curiosity do you have the .msl you used to make your virtual dyno?

Reverant 08-21-2012 03:45 AM
