So at this point I could buy a new crank, new rod(s), new bearings, maybe a new oil pump, probably new pistons, and rings to be safe. The head also should be gone through to ensure there's no bearing material in the cams/journals and a valve job at that point because why not.

But that starts adding up, so instead this happened...

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424667840

Which was also expensive but at least it leaves me all the other parts to rebuild at my leisure.

very nice. I was just about to say don't you dare put any more money into that other block

Last weekend Pat and I replaced the water pump and timing belt with the new stuff that I had put on the other motor. No sense in letting it all go to waste. And today G and I put it in the car.

Or even better!

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424668806

But none of that yet. We put it back together na and it seems to run nice. I'll drive it around a bit some this week and then schedule my appointment with the BAR.

EO2K 02-23-2015 12:30 AM

Not only does it run, it sounds great. If I wasn't on such a tight schedule we could have driven it around some.

Enjoy the beer, I left that Rochefort 10 in the fridge ;)

Wait, you come and help me put the motor in the car and you leave me a Trappist? Thanks again for all the help! And thanks to Pat too.

So my BAR referee appointment was today...

I put the factory air box back on so as to have no question about my crankcase ventilation system being sealed. But it was probably unnecessary as the guy at the referee place barely gave it a cursory look.

Unfortunately I did not get my smog exemption sticker today. They took some pictures and photocopied my paperwork and sent it off to someone at the state level. Once that person gets around to looking at my paperwork (and approving it) I have to schedule another appointment to go back and get my sticker.

Oh well, one more hoop to jump though.

In other news, given that the exo seems to be mostly working, I decided to move the other project on to the lift in order to spur some work on it :fael:

The NB! It moved!

Mobius 03-07-2015 02:08 AM

Good to see progress! One day I will have the problem of "which project to put on the lift."

Yes, me too :) I was a bit frustrated at the bureocracy of it all, but I got a call this morning saying its been looked at and approved! Just need to schedule another appointment and I'll get my smog exemption sticker!

Also I do feel quite fortunate about my garage situation. But seeing as I don't own the place there is the mild concern that when I have to move I won't be able to find a comprable place :p

I've been remiss in my updates to this thread...

CONGRATS!!!!!!!

$1006.00? That's quite the registration fee. :eek5:

Like I said in the text, congrats man! :bigtu: What a long strange trip its been, eh?

Jeffbucc 06-16-2015 11:13 PM

That rego price makes me so happy I don't live in CA. Yikes.

codrus 06-16-2015 11:22 PM

The VLF is 0.65%, so that's got to be more than just one year's registration fees (or else they assessed it at $150K!). Is there "sales tax" when you first register an SB100? Or is that the sales tax on the kit or something?

When registering a SPCNs (SB100) car you have to show receipts for all major components (technically everything) that went in to the car. For anything that you did not pay sales tax on when you bought it, you then have to pay the DMV sales tax on :p

Registration was $139 for a year, not great but not move out of the state bad.

So you have $9126 in parts in the car? The base kit is around $7500, right?

If I'm not mistaken it should be way less than that. Unless they charged you tax again on the xidas?

I'll take a look at the itemized receipt later, for now I'll keep telling myself that I'm in to it for less than 10k (not including the motor fiasco).

Speaking of cheap! I bought a millermatic 135 from a coworker of mine and to ensure it works I built this out of junk laying around the garage.

I think eo2k gave me the muffler forever ago and most of the rest came from the stock nb muffler piping.

The main goal was get it tucked in closer as the mazdaspeed exhaust stuckout about 18" from the rear most part of the car. Success there.

It sounds pretty good at idle, but rather raspy when free reving. Well see if its OK when the cars under load but I expect it will be pretty bad. Ah well, more attention!

EO2K 06-20-2015 07:35 PM

Muahaha! I was going to say, I recognize that muffler  I brought it over to your place in SC when we were thinking about building an exhaust for Oliver.
