Haraise's slow build thread...

Mainly doing this for myself, to have a build log. Not going to be the fastest or flashiest build ever...

My fourth Miata, Haraise.

Nagase 08-28-2009 06:20 PM

Thanks! ^_^ I have a matching Hello Kitty oil cap too. I love her with the little scarf, racing.

Forgot the MMR engine mounts:

Tonight I'll be putting on the steering wheel, update when that happens.

One Miata waiting patiently, one getting ready to get a new flywheel/clutch, and another car to drive at the moment...
http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...o/IMG_0145.jpg

Edit: Why won't I love the MMR mounts? I had Mazda Comp mounts in my last car and thought stiffer yet would be better.

Nagase 08-28-2009 11:38 PM

Installed the wheel, it's not as small as I'd expected, but I can still see my gauges, so I'm not complaining! The adaptor and deep dish puts the wheel much closer to me, which is awesome for me, as I like the wheel up close. I'm pretty happy about this, here's a crappy night pic:

http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...o/IMG_0152.jpg

Nagase 10-13-2009 03:52 AM

Been busy with something else lately, but I'm currently putting in a six speed transmission, 8lb flywheel, ACT Extreme clutch and SS clutch line right now.

1stproject 10-13-2009 09:23 AM

That is 1 clean BMW. Good luck with the build.

Nagase 10-13-2009 09:58 PM

The BMW is being pulled apart, likely needs a head gasket.

The Miata... has some rust on the bottom. How unexpected, for an Arizona car. Grinding it down and spraying it over with some paint.

My frame rails are pretty much all pwnt, unsure what to do there. Box them in? Cut out and replace? Ignore it?

neogenesis2004 10-13-2009 10:13 PM

My frame rails underneath are pretty jacked up to. My car is fast and can take turns fast, so I don't give a fuck. Later I might get some of those nifty bolt in rails.

Nagase 11-22-2009 07:38 AM

Progress!

Installing the 1.6 Fidanza flywheel and ACT Extreme + Organic clutch and flywheel, with the six speed looking on...

http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...vino/web-2.jpg

And with it installed, I have shifting again! It'll take a while to learn that I have six speeds... haven't had that since the NC. :)

http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...o/IMG_0007.jpg

And up next...

http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...o/IMG_0008.jpg

FM springs, FCM mounts, bilsteins. That'll be first unless my Megasquirt shows up soon...

Progress makes me a happy panda. :)

Nagase 11-27-2009 08:17 AM

Question: How do you save the boots from the shifter that you've recently bought and installed?

Answer: Goatse...

http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...ino/goatse.jpg

And my god, I've now been distracted by Left 4 Dead 2... up until 6:20 because I can't get past the bridge in advanced...

Nagase 12-05-2009 08:21 AM

Some more work done lately, more little things...

Like wondering how my front PPF bolt stayed on before I took it off... There's not a nut up top?!?

Setup a battery mount in the stock location:

http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...o/IMG_0021.jpg

And rewired the reverse switch (turns out that it doesn't matter which wires you put together):

http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...o/IMG_0022.jpg

Still can't drive the car until I get my Megasquirt, so haven't been rushing...

secretsquirrel 12-05-2009 08:41 AM

Can you flip the battery over in the mount? I ask because the posts appear awfully close to the deck...

Nagase 12-05-2009 09:02 AM

Certainly, what do you think of this?

http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...IMG_0023-1.jpg

Thank you. :)

secretsquirrel 12-05-2009 09:53 AM

Would suck to have welding going on in the trunk while you are driving...GL with the build!

railz 12-05-2009 05:23 PM

looks like you have your FM springs up side down?

Nagase 12-05-2009 05:31 PM

Ah, how can you tell which side is up and down? I put it so the writing is right side up...bah.

Still need to put the spacers on anyway.

Nagase 12-11-2009 02:57 PM

Today the wizard gave my car a brain.

Sweet.

I still weep a little when I remember the day my MS came to life.

Just don't tell my wife I was more proud of that than when she gave birth to our daughter.

No...but it will be a great day for ya.

Don't be intimidated by datalogging and analyzing...it couldn't be easier with this setup.

It's fun to talk to my friends with other makes of cars they are trying to tune and see the engine management bandaids they put up with. I try and talk everyone into the most capable setup similar to MS made for their pile.

I have a buddy with a 10psi Lightning that I leave car lengths behind in the middle of third gear. Poor guy has no idea what his tune looks like...he just knows he's got 5 of them he can switch between on his little card/chip. They go from "smokes rubber but slow" to "damn...what's under the hood of that Prius?"

Nagase 12-11-2009 06:42 PM

My last setup on my old turbo Miata was a LINK piggyback... I'm thinking this will be a lot easier to deal with. :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence though!

And yeah, most people on SVTPerformance.com just get flashes online... kinda weirds me out.

longuyen88 12-13-2009 03:24 PM

Good progress!

What rear end ratio are you running?

Nagase 12-13-2009 03:31 PM

Right now I'm just running the standard 1990 4.3 6" diff. Might have a line on a torsen, though...

longuyen88 12-13-2009 05:31 PM

Wonder how crazy it'd be with the super short geared tranny with the 4.3

Nagase 12-13-2009 11:24 PM

Lol, it won't be crazy at all. It's still just a stock, high miliage 1.6l.

However, I did get something today to help give that old motor a bit more life...

http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...IMG_0082-1.jpg

Nagase 04-22-2010 07:50 PM

Alright, finally update time. Just installed Bilstein shocks, Flyin Miata springs, Fat Cat motorsports Top Hats (with spacers) and some 949Racing adjustable heim jointed endlinks, got a couple pictures before my picture taker left:

Me working on my car, nice shot i think:

My friend Pat working on tightening that long bolt (that wrench eventually fell off on the shakedown run, bad Pat!):

Also, got the BMW going!

http://i41.tinypic.com/258qbfc.jpg

Nagase 06-21-2010 08:13 PM

Ok, so finally some updates. Easy to install parts got my spirit back into this:

Added these, my 1.6 stock n/a engine now tops out at 150:
http://i50.tinypic.com/14in0bs.jpg

Then i added this and got up to 155:
http://i47.tinypic.com/10najns.jpg

Then added a clutch clip so i can start the car with the clutch out, that adds about 10 horsepower. Off hunting down M3's now, from a 70 roll.

Up next:
http://i50.tinypic.com/2ed59tt.jpg

Then i'll be a real touge monster!

Have, still to install:
Complete ES bushing kit
4.1 Torsen w/mmr mounts
MMR engine mounts

Edit:
Dirty car to keep the po-po off my back, ya know.
List for self reference:
MSPNP
Touge Run Lip
Carbon mirrors
COP's
LC1 wideband
Six speed
Voodoo knob
6lb flywheel + ACT XTSS clutch/pp
Depowered PS
Weight removal
Race wheel
Hello kitty bits
PC680 battery
Bilstien R-Package shocks
Flyin Miata springs
949 racing endlinks
FCM mounts and spacers
Decent HU and speakers

neogenesis2004 06-21-2010 09:34 PM

I'm so gay for Mariner Blue. Looking like a good mod list so far. Not much left other than putting on a churbo.

Up next is:
1.8 swap kit (waiting for you, UrbanSoot)
VVT engine (waiting for you, vvt controller guy)
RB hollow front sway
Cloth glass top
Some interior bits
Tint
Rollbar
Wheels/Tires

And i have a very shiny bit coming up soon... need to figure out how to cut the rear bumper for that. :D

If this a street car, you're going to hate life with that exhaust and mmr mounts. Just sayin.

Exhaust is just beginning. Abe at ARTech is doing it, very excited to get it. :)

The MMR's are supposed to be livable if you have them back and front, from the research i've done. If not, i'll just put one Mazdacomp mount on one side, read that'll take care of it.

i actually had an exhaust exactly like that before on an N/A Miata, except it ended with an uncapped supertrapp under the trunk. Liked it except on the highway. Would like a louder turbo Miata this time around.

theshdwconspracy 06-23-2010 06:35 PM

so we have oddly identical cars, we also live within 30 min of each other.

ps, remember that 1.6 motor you sold awhile ago????

Dude, no way! That was you? :D

Did you say you were going to build that up yourself?

That's so cool.

theshdwconspracy 06-23-2010 07:11 PM

yeah the head is off it and I'm giong to port/polish it and maybe do some valvetrain stuff just to get some better performance out of it. Then in the long run I'll build up parts for a full build but thats a while out

Cool, might want to check on those valve seals, i'm not sure but i'd have a look at them.

Oddly similar cars? Where's your build thread? :D

theshdwconspracy 06-23-2010 07:41 PM

no build thread yet, just an intro thread with a pic of the car.

will start my build when i get home at the end of the month

Nagase 06-23-2010 07:46 PM

Cool, i'd like to see what our cars share. So far i've seen color and lip...

Nagase 06-24-2010 01:48 AM

Straight shot:

Minimal bends, awesome v-bands:

Donno about that, my old turbo Miata had a HUGE magniflow back there and it still used to set off car alarms... N/A this should be loud. Not as loud as when i ran a straight pipe, but still... i'm thinking.

theshdwconspracy 06-24-2010 11:20 PM

nothing better than straight pipe to megaphoneeeeee hahaha

Nagase 06-24-2010 11:22 PM

Lol, when i ran straightpipe to uncapped supertrapp it was pretty close. :D Would have been better if the muffler didn't end under my trunk though, made a terrible drone.

Nagase 07-01-2010 07:30 PM

Silly thing that makes the car go no faster:

http://i50.tinypic.com/2rxier4.jpg

Feel a sudden urge to do a partout...

But really, UrbanSoot is a good seller. :)

http://i46.tinypic.com/28hk1uu.jpg

Right now: Swapping in torsen and exhaust, will have pics once i can get the... darned bushings out of the rear diff, going with MMR units.

Also: Want to go one solid mount/one MS mount on the engine, which side does each go on?

Nagase 07-12-2010 04:51 PM

Did some stuff:

SS brake lines (forgot to take pics!):
http://i31.tinypic.com/25iotqq.jpg

949Racing Lugs:
http://i32.tinypic.com/eje6g2.jpg

949Racing rear finish + Blacked tails (and sidemarkers) + 3" ARTech exhaust:
http://i28.tinypic.com/2dltaj6.jpg

Approaching levels of rice... need VVT controller so i can swap in a decent engine...

Nagase 07-14-2010 01:27 PM

So.

Just got word back that there is no such thing as a v-banded 2560.

Looks like i'll be going with a cheap 2560 setup for a while then...

Looking for:

S14 T28 (2560 for cheapz)
One more RX7 550, then get them cleaned and flowed
190HP fuel pump
EVO front intercooler
SSQV Bov
Some heavy duty manifold and good downpipe (Begi?)
NXS MBC
Some boost gauge
ARTech coolant/oil lines
Some kind of intercooler piping

Anything i'm missing here for a turbo?

Kinda bummed about this.

shlammed 07-14-2010 11:09 PM

just go 2860 and get the vbanded turbo then.

Nagase 07-16-2010 05:31 PM

Originally Posted by shlammed (Post 601614)

Thought about it, but don't want a turbo that gives me headroom to go over 250whp. Know that i'll want more and want to push it. Rear end, clutch, transmission, are all setup for at least 280 ft/lbs, so i'll be fine... Just need to wait on the awesome setup until after my built engine.

Really, my old journal bearing T3 .50/.50 was just too laggy for me, on twisty roads. Want response this time.

Bond 07-16-2010 05:34 PM

I thought artiepartie had a 2560 with absurdflow and v-bands...

It looks like he has studs for mani to turbo, and v band on the exhaust
