That sucks, sorry to hear it man. My head is torqued to 65 ft/lbs on the early studs IIRC.

der_vierte 12-28-2020 02:50 AM

Really sad..

What about your old head, Andy? Resurface the old NA head and send it again?

Fireindc 12-28-2020 12:29 PM

So sorry to hear about your head man. That really sucks. I know I've read so much info about head stud torque, some saying 90ftlbs is going to crack heads, others saying that it wont. I think I went to 75 ftlbs on mine with ARP hardware after a bunch of reading through the forums, and some old posts by savington talking about cracking heads.

As for my timing map, it's just the default braineack map for a 99-00. I'm only running 12PSI or so. Seems to be det free, but it concerned me the amount of timing on the top-end compared to my old map. It actually had less timing in the midrange. All of this makes sense because your det resistance increases with RPM and whatnot, but I've still been a bit hesitant to crank the boost on pump gas. Gonna see what it can do on e85 next year though. Let me know what you think. It's a stock compression bp4w, at altitude, and a oldskool gt2860rs.

HOT in vacuum and transition, conservative at high boost midrange, not so much up top. Better clean that up a bit

The other head is also a BP4W. Yea the plan is pull this one and transfer everything to the other head and get it surfaced, hot tanked and bead blasted. And use much less than 90ftlb like 65-70 at most.

we had a head crack in the dome by the valve, and do literally the same as you're describing. stock bolts and torque. so I'm not sure your problem is from over-torque. might be a faulty head. (ours was never boosted and came out of a stock nb2)

Vlad, thanks so much for the reply. Yea it's odd because the first 20 or so miles it was fine, then it just progressively got worse. I haven't done a compression test or coolant pressure test yet but that's the next step before I pull it off. Yea maybe this head is just junk, when I pull it off it'll be interesting to see what failed. Pretty bummed about it I was legit excited to get this head on. I still did a virtual dyno pull even with this issue because I was so mad at the car, it made 401whp @22psi in 33* temps outside. So she was eating even with the head messed up. But after that I parked the car and I'll get to it probably in a couple weeks when I have time.

der_vierte 12-29-2020 04:20 AM

:eek5:

If I'm getting 320-330whp out of my BP05 head and with 102 ROZ (US95), I'm totally happy.

Sorry to hear about your cylinder head. I can relate, that sorta happened to me on a refreshed head.

Looking forward to your build, always like to see your numbers go up.

Curious, what kinda issue did you have?

I thought I knew I was doing  Didn't realize I flipped the head gasket and installed it wrong. Oil starved a refreshed cylinder head, and had to get another used cylinder head.

Oh man that sucks, its easy to make that mistake. My HG was installed correctly but alas the head had other ideas.

Here is the last VD pull I did before I parked the car awaiting pulling the head back off. I think the tires spun a little bit which inflated tq peak but the hp# should be pretty accurate. I use the same stretch of road for all my VD pulls and its been very close to the local Dynojet that I use. My goal was 400whp but now I have to swap heads again, this was short lived but it will be back soon.

This was the last VD pull I did before I parked the car because of the head issue. 21-22psi, TQ seems a little on the high side could have been a little tire spin.

Man, it's gonna be sweet. I'm excited to just crack 300whp, mine was around 270whp at 12-13psi. Going to crank the boost next year on some corn.

Also, when did you get the is300? Always wanted one, is it a manual trans?

der_vierte 12-31-2020 12:58 PM

Andy, these numbers are pretty impressive. You'll be in need of a BMW transmission, if you're going to beat on it in the future, haha.
Maybe keep the boost a bit lower in the midrange and turn it up after 5000rpm, just for the love of the 6 speed :D

Oh you'll definitely break 300 on corn. Crank her up already!!! Lol. I got the is300 last month when I sold my rsx type-S. It is a manual transmission on the is300, they are really hard to find and this one is bone stock. I'm gonna daily it for a year or so, then gonna build the 2jzge and throw on a GTX3582 and a haltech. Looking to make 600+ on it lol.

Thanks man, yes the 6 speed is on borrowed time. My last one took the abuse for about 2 years, this one has been in the car since March and so far it's holding up. ZF swap would be nice to have that's for certain.

andyfloyd 01-01-2021 10:40 AM

here is part 1 of 2 for the great head swap. Lol

Ken Hill 01-04-2021 04:28 PM

Congrats on getting the head swapped over and making even more power.

For those of you following the build thread here is some pretty cool news. So I was messaged on Facebook by Mike from kraken, he said he loves the videos we have been making and that I'm not a twat lol. He sent me a whole low mount kit for nothing, he didn't even ask for anything in return. But I do plan to do a nice install video and some comparisons vs the FM kit. Pretty sure the goal of 400whp will be much easier considering his manifold design is far superior to the FM log. Also will have a 3" downpipe instead of the 2.5" I was running. I've always wanted one of his kits but the FM stuff worked fine, but I'll gladly make the switch considering his generous gesture. So when my spare head gets done at the machine shop I'll be running a kraken low mount instead!

Look at the beautiful nearly equal length cast ni-resist manifold and that sexy DP.

Kraken supplies their own inconel studs and nuts but I'll be switching to my stage 8 locking nuts that are on the FM mani.

The upper DP is cast ni-resist and flows smoothly into the 3" downpipe.

My eBay carbon lip spoiler was cracking so I sanded it down to bare and reepoxied it. Turned out pretty nice.
