Yeah, the knock threshold was a little too low so it pulled timing. Didn't realize this was what was happening until the car was off the dyno. Although it's smoother, the built engine is much noisier than my stock engine.

That's what I thought. While things fall off at the end, it doesn't seem like the mani bought you a hell of a lot?? What's your feeling, in the car - or am I just dumb and missing something?
Flipside currently has plans for extending the runners out and upwards to add about 4" of length to them. I won't be part of that development because I'm selling it as soon as I get it back, but perhaps the next owner will contact Rob and work with him to finish this project. |
why would you go through all of this and then sell it?
i thoiught you might have enjoyed it abit first.. |

shame, im from the UK and you inspired me all the way over here, although over here i wont be putting mine on a drag strip, you keep me thinking of putting on a large supercharger maybe mp90 and pushing the bounderies.
thanks for that.. jon. |

It took me 1.5# more boost with the 99 intake manifold to equal the Flipside manifold using the same timing map. That difference will just get bigger as more air is pushed through it. I also didn't play around with the timing at all. Any areas over 7000 rpm don't have any timing in them (knock sensor set too sensitive and it pulled timing) and that's the reason it falls off severely there. These runs were purely to get a comparison.
http://abefm.smugmug.com/Miata/Quest...48_eVVoi-O.png It took a little work to get this to scale, but you can see, the only place the aftermarket did you any good at all was on the low end - sub 4500 rpm. Maybe I need to take a better look at it, but it doesn't seem from what you've shown you're really getting a LOT out of it. Maybe a bit, but not a lot. For that matter, didn't you do this with VICS locked in one position? That would hurt it's low end, and you'd expect the big jump around 5k. |
the more I look at those two graphs the more I'm not impressed with the sheet metal intake manifold. the increase is just not big enough IMHO. but that's just my uneducated ass lol, I'm probably wrong

I think there's bit of confusion here. On plot #125 ~ it is showing that with how my car sits NOW, it took 1.5# more boost to equal what I got from the Flipside manifold. I've made improvements to the car since I pulled the Flipside manifold off so it's not a fair comparison. Sort of like how many people say "I don't need that part, I'll just turn the boost up". If I put the Flipside manifold back on, I could put down even better numbers than I did last time. Which really bothers me because when I get the manifold back I'm going to sell it.
Here's the closest apples to apples comparison between a stock manifold and the Flipside manifold on my car. It's not back to back testing, but it's all I have. Attachment 198206 |
so with the mani you make less torque but more power?
|
Yeah the second plot, that's huge. The first one, I'm not impressed at all, as I mentioned, 1.5 psi is HUGE at... 2 psi. But at 20 psi, it's a very small percentage.
What improvements did you make since the flipside?? I'm really curious. When are you actuating VICS? |

After an alignment and adding FM front and rear sways I'm very happy with how the car feels. Running the front bar on full stiff and the rear on full soft seems to be working great with my suspension and driving style. Pushed it quite hard yesterday and it felt solid without excessive oversteer.
|
Are you running MT back and RS3 front, 6UL 8" all the way around?
|
What do you have your cam set to? I just got my FM cam gear in the mail

I've actually been trying to shed some power this year to make the car more drivable on street tires. I put a smaller wastegate spring in and now am running it at a max of 16# of boost and my timing is several degrees prior to mbt. |
I'm very interested what your powerband looks like right now at only 16#.
When are you going to be dynoing? Please don't forget to post up a baseline of what the car is at right now (for us that plan to operate at that pressure level in the future:)) if you can |
