Really excited that we are moving back to the US in March now, instead of June. I have a 2001 Honda S2000 that has been sitting for me for a few years, one owner with less than 30,000 miles on it but has title issues. I can get the car for less than $3,000. What would you do with the 9K RPM drivetrain? Fix car and drive as epic daily as a stock S2000 AP1 or add a supercharger? Keep stock and give to 14 year old Vietnamese daughter and let her be the focus of all of the other Vietnamese boys' wet dreams in high school? Consider it a cheap drivetrain and put it into a Miata or build another LoCost?

GO!

Isn't untouched S2000 starting to get a little rare, worth to keep "functional" stockish?
The engine is at least here starting to get 2JZ prices (at least more than half of that)?

Mild Rotrex and suspension "correction" maybe?

I'd try my best to get a clean title for it, because a 30k mile AP1 has got to be worth north of 25k if you could sort that out.

Of course, if you get a salvage or rebuilt title for it, then it would be worth just driving the **** out of it.

I probably wouldn't give a s2000 to a 14 year old, they are pretty high strung snappy cars.

Give it to daughter to help overcome extra teenage awkwardness added by being from out of town. Give strict orders that no boy ever drives it or it becomes dad's toy and she gets a Schwinn.

I'm going to get the S2000 either way. I've debated hunting down the original owner and offer him $1,000 for the title. Even if he lost or threw it away it would be worth his time to go to DMV and get another one. The only risk is that if he has a clue what it's worth today he might try to get it back from the guys that have it. He bought a house from my friends and got the loan through my friends also. They do a lot of lending to people that can't get credit. After a year or so he was behind on the house payments and slipped away in the night, leaving the Honda behind. They foreclosed on the house and got it back and the car was in the garage so they got to keep it. They still have it 16 years later. Car still has 2002 California plates on it. He must have driven the crap out of it to put 30,000 miles on it in a year. It has some issues - smashed windshield and a dent in the rear quarter but nothing bad. Technically they put a lien on the car so he can't just come back and get it. I can buy the car for $3,000 as it is. They would have to get a mechanics lien on it to get a Nebraska title. But then it's a salvage or rebuilt title. If I can get him to sign the title over to me and I tell him that I'm also paying off the lien that's against it he might just take the $1,000 free money. Heck, I could go $2,000 if I had to.

Lol, dude is def not signing over the title

90's / early 00s Japanese stuff in good condition is selling for absolutely CRAZY money right now, just look at BAT https://bringatrailer.com/honda/s2000/

Lots of bored guys in their 30s/40s right now who finally have means are looking to relive their youths and these cars are at the top of the list. As the boomers die out a lot of the market for older, stinky hot rods and 50s cars is juuuust starting to tip over (although 60s/70s stuff is still going gangbusters) and while malaise era cars aren't appealing, 90s & 00 stuff is just going to climb higher. Haggerty had a pretty solid article in I think Hemmings about the surge in "collectors insurance" quotes for these things and also the "agreed upon value" averages. I'll see if I can find it and link it back here.

My old SAAB doing SAAB things on Rocky Mountain Race Week. I give the new owner props for setting out on such a long drive with no support vehicle with multiple drag races in between. Jump to 42:30 for the interview and an easy trip down the strip. No hard launch and he's at 218 whp. It's a stock bottom end with a lot of miles on it. His objective is to just finish race week. He said it drives great. I never drove it more than 50 feet in the driveway so I never knew how it would handle at speed as a 11" stretched Miata.
