Haha! Win! My line isn't as terrible as I would have expected

able to maintain line?

we must fix this

I noticed at times I was into the throttle well before the apex and I kept thinking "You moron, if you are into the power this early your line sucks." :vash:

MRLS was a blast, as usual. Surprisingly it was more disorganized this year with 300-400 cars than it was last year with like 1,900 cars. It's been a full year since I've been on a track and I thought I did pretty well for myself. I absolutely know I'm making up for lack of skill with excessive power, but its still fun as hell. I screwed up and left the GoPro and GPS at home on Saturday, but it looks like I managed to turn a 1:55.08 on Sunday with no traffic. I'm averaging 1:57~ish if I can get clear of other cars and actually get point-bys. To give you an idea how how slow I am, Mark Drennen (sp?) in SM is something like 1:46.

My achilles heel at MRLS is 8a and 11.

In 8a I always feel like I'm in the wrong place and my brain always wants to wrestle the car into cutting inside rather than tracking out and using the whole track. This is wrong and dangerous, and I need to solve this so I don't end up in the wall. When I hit it just right and track out its glorious, otherwise I scrub a shitload of speed and feel like an idiot.

In 11 I brake too early and turn in too early, loose a ton of speed and then try to make up with it my hamfisting the throttle down the straight. The car gooooes like a goddamn rocket and with no one in my way, my completely inaccurate speedometer is showing something like 110~120mph well before T1, then my survival instinct kicks in and I start to lift. I'm always scared to death there will be a stock NA6 puttering its way down the hill on the other side of that crest. Plus I just don't have the cojones to take that rise at 110~120mph, or whatever the hell speed I'd hurtling up there at.

The rest of the turns I know what I'm supposed to do and generally I can do it. My big issue is turning in too soon, early apex and then fight the car on track out because I'm in horrible position. I guess its good that I know I'm doing this, now I just need to get all the synapse firing at the same time and make it happen.

Still fun as shit. Need more wheel time.

my completely inaccurate speedometer
umm :eek5:
How inacurate is it?

EO2K 10-05-2015 05:19 PM

According to the data, I consistently wuss out at about 107mph. So its like 10-15mph off at 107mph. Assuming of course I was looking at the gauges when that happened, and things seem to happen very quickly at that speed under those conditions.

aidandj 10-05-2015 05:22 PM

Post data. I want to see your corner speeds. I maxed at 100 and ran a couple 1:55s

I only used RaceChrono for like, 2 sessions. I'll see if I can figure out how to make it do that thing you just did. Best recorded on RC was 99.3mph

But enough about me :giggle:

Car is amazeballs. If I do my part I can take the 'power line' through 4, 5 and 9 and steer the car with throttle, its absolutely unreal. Its so linear at all throttle positions it just feels like a bigger engine. The boost is right there when you want it. It's very similar to the Rotrex in that regard, I can say this with confidence as I'm one of the few people who has actually run both. But that's about where the comparison ends. The EFR just does everything better. Spoiler alert: there is no real comparison.

Safety is a huge issue. I'm that "asshole trackday bro" making stupid HP with stock seats and 3 points. This needs to be addressed with a quickness. I squeezed my fatass into a couple seats over the weekend and I think I found something that can work. I need to remember to poke Turbofan and find out which Sparco he has on his passenger side, and then I need to buy 2 of them. I want to say it was a Sparco Sprint? I also need a harness bar. Gesso and I did some snooping and he says it does not look like it would be terribly difficult to fabricate. Hard Dog wants $150 for their bar, so we'll see. Oh, and I need harnessessess.

Thermal control is an issue. It gets hot as shit in the car and I need to figure out how to mitigate that. Also, for all the hate that my flexible heatshield got in aidandj's thread, the burnt part was my fault for not leaving an air gap. After I fixed the air gap it worked fine. Master cylinder, brake lines and stock prop valve get hot, but I can hold my fingers on them for 7-10 seconds after a 20 minute session, so its absolutely doing something. However. I do need to come up with a better heat shield solution for the brake assembly.

Brakes are starting to become an issue. I'm fast enough now that I'm getting fade in certain places. Its consistent so I know its coming and I can prepare for it, but it needs to be addressed. At this power level I need to step up to something with more thermal capacity and I need to get my ducts installed. I'm seeing 11.75s in my future.

Drivetrain held up grrrrreat! EFR, FM1 clutch, super old Racing Beat aluminum flywheel, 6 speed, 3.63 Torsen, axles, driveshaft, the whole show. Engine actually did just fine other than the obvious oil seepage issue from the valve stem seals and the small blue/black cloud and oil stench on startup. Plugs still look good, nothing scary on the plugs. Makes silly power, makes insane jet engine noises, etc. Other than the obvious, I'm pretty happy with how everything is running. I'd love to get the engine on a dyno to get glory pulls with EBC on/off.

I love that the cooling system is the least of my concerns. Trackspeed radiator, M-Tuned Reroute, cast impeller water pump, 195° thermostat and with GIANORMOUS intercooler and marginal ducting there are absolutely zero issues with cooling. Zero. So much win.

I need gauges that work. Actually, I need warning lights. Looking down at gauges is frankly a little terrifying in this car and I need something more "active" in my FOV. I'm thinking a wart on the A pillar with 4 warning lights would be perfect: water temp, water pressure, oil temp and oil pressure would just about do it. Though functional gauges would also be nice.

The more I look at this list the more and more racecar this thing is starting to get. Oy.

Have you sat in my Recaro Pole Positions? I think they're awesome, very supportive, very comfortable and quite streetable.

What's making it hot? All I've got is stock insulation under the carpet, but there's not really an engine-induced heat problem in the cabin.

TSE 11.75s, TSE ducts, and DTC-60s are working nicely for me.

And yes, the TSE rad is stupendous. Basically I've come over to the camp of "If something is a reliability problem on the track, just ask Andrew and do what he says". :)

Note, however, that Laguna is relatively easy on the cooling system because the air tends to be pretty cool. Thunderhill is a much tougher nut to crack (and the TSE rad was awesome there in May with 95F+ as well). It's likely you'll need to fix the lack of ducting before going there.

I could hear jet noises as I approached his car on the track. It was amazing. Then heard nothing as I passed him because I'm sure if he had even touched the throttle I would not have been able to pass at all.

Pics soon. I have awesome corkscrew pics.

:( Recaro pulled them and you can't get them anywhere anymore. They were on the top of my list at one point. Lack of FIA would not stop me from running one, if I could get one.

I'm not 100% sure but the car was very very hot inside this weekend. Hotter than I can ever remember. Carpet over the trans tunnel was uncomfortably hot to the touch, so I'll start there. Remember I have that great big resonator up there next to the transmission so that may have something to do with it. I may have had the heater on as well :bang:

^^ Sounds like a recipe for success. I think Ed was running DTC-60s as well?

We should all just do this from now on.

Yep. I've done ChunderHill in 100F+ before and it was no picnic. Rest assured that much much more ducting is in the works, I've been taking notes and following a lot of threads here on MT.

Haha, thats awesome. And yeah, basically all throttle usage had to stop any time I pointed anyone by. :giggle: I'm not exaggerating when I say I could pass pretty much anyone on the straights but my cornering speeds are low and my lines suck, and I make liberal use of the point-by whenever I feel like I'm holding someone up. There were a couple other turbo cars in C and it was pretty obvious who they were. They were prepped with brakes and such so it was really great to follow something with a more liberal amount of power.

You and Ed though, holy shit. You guys drive aggressive as hell and I had a tough time keeping up. Not like "asshole!" aggressive, but comfortable aggressive, if that makes sense. After the smoke screen I had a super tough time catching you again, and then I got stuck behind someone who wouldn't point me by. I'm guessing its probably because you've got a lot more track hours under your belt in the last 6 months than I have had in the last 3 years. But its fun, and I learn more every time

It was my last session of the weekend. I went hard

It was my 8th track day in 3 months. I think I have a problem. I'm no wizard behind the wheel, but I have come to know my car pretty good. Also the new brakes, and aero I had that session were a nice confidence boost.

There's a new one that fixes the issue. It looks basically the same, but I don't know if it fits as well as the original.

https://www.recaro-automotive.com/us...sition-ng.html

After Keith's car broke early on Saturday (and with bbundy not present), I only saw a couple cars in A that had anything approaching the straight-line speed of mine. One was Zandr's blue-and-white 95 LS3, and I was pleased to see how little gap he actually pulled on me down the straight. The other was a greenish-purple NB that I don't know whose it is.
