@Joe Perez I suspect your 1980s Japanese engineer knew exactly what they were doing and the tolerances were well on the generous side. In fact, I'd almost be more comfortable doing that on something Japanese that was designed in the 80's without the "benefits" of Finite Element Analysis and "Value Engineering" ...assuming the rest of the parts were up to snuff as well.

FEA and CFD has created the slow and miserable death of real engineering and mechanical intuition and you cannot convince me otherwise. So often do I see non-validated, untested and horribly represented CFD and or FEA passed off as "oh look we did R&D on a product".

@Brap-Brap Power steering cooler was discussed at the end of my post, its definitely something I'll be looking into.

I'm honestly surprised I didn't have to say "inb4deletepowersteering" Good to know we are all on the same page.

Having driven a PS and a de-powered car on track, yea I like PS lol. Only issue I run into is with PS I tend to overdrive the front tires as I put in more steering angle than I really need, but thats an issue between the seat and the steering wheel, not with PS.

I do enjoy the creative use of RX7 oil cooler. I feel like I know someone who has one of those sitting in their garage...


Goddammit RockAuto, I paid you extra for delivery by Friday! Stupid hoses have been bouncing around FedEx locations in Illinois for the last 2 days, what the ****. If I wanted it on Tuesday of next week I would not have paid extra >:(

If the car ends up sitting all 3 day weekend while I wait for hoses, I'm gonna be PISSED. I might call the local FLAPS and see if they can cross-reference the Edelmann PN and get me some hoses by Friday. I'm not going to miss getting this thing running while waiting for $20 worth of hoses.

I was looking into using one of those RX7 coolers as the heat exchanger for w2a intercooler, but couldn't nail down what the fittings were, or something

I feel like the fitting PNs used to be here on MT, but the last time I looked, I couldn't find them :(

Speaking of A2W, I stumbled across something interesting the other day: This is a CSF hybrid inverter cooler from a 2017 Toyota Camry Hybrid:




It happens to share the same PN as the NGK BKR6EIX-11 spark plugs that I was going to buy for this project, otherwise I never would have noticed it. Not sure how well the 11/16" inlet/outlet would work for an A2W cooling application or if it has enough surface area to get the job done, but that's a fantastic form-factor for such things. Turns out that basically all hybrids have some sort of separate cooling loop for the inverters so I'm sure other ones could be found as well.

A2W does seem like an incredibly poor decision, based on my space constraints. Humm...

Yeah, I had the same problem w/ Rock Auto. I had the driveshaft seal for the trans ordered, paid extra to have it delivered on Thursday last week. Tracking change the deliver date to Monday (WTF!!), and it's still not here. Needless to say, I'm pissed.

57 DOLLARYDOOS!!!! I think all the W2A stuff is based on 3/4" hose so that 11/16 is pretty damn close. I think my problem with the mazda RX stuff was by the time you buy whatever orphan size to 3/4" barb fittings you need (some options were AN, others something I could find only in plastic for agricultural sprayers depending on cooler choice) and an ebay chinesium aluminium cooler (with the right ports, some were AN, others ORB or whatever weird size stock was) would add enough money you could jsut go ahead and buy a CX racing heat exchanger. But that looks like a good option.

Called the FLAPS, they are getting me 2 hoses. Double the price but that's literally $20. They should be on the 7am truck from the warehouse. I think this is the first time RockAuto had ever let me down

I hear what you're saying. And yeah, the Hilux was an outlier even for Toyota. But there seems to be a corporate design philosophy which extends out to all of their engines.

I mean, you remember that one Honda sedan that had a non-interference engine, cylinder walls thick enough to take .060 over, and didn't require power-steering fluid made from unicorn tears?

I might have an oil cooler for you in my mom's garage. I am trying to minimize my visits because she is in a high risk group for this virus. I will message you but it might be a few weeks, I just dropped some things for her a few days ago.

It was the pressure line, and it was where where the hard line at the end of it is joined (brazed?) to the "banjo" fitting. Same thing both times.

You're messing with my ability to quote you when you put your comments inside what you quoted....

Yes. you are so right. There are QC procedures for verifying 1) that the FEA program is correct as written, and then 2) via actual, empirical testing, that the FEA represents actual part performance. THEN you can correctly use that program for that style of part and obtain reliable results. These steps are rarely taken. Even operator error is highly possible (how do you constrain the part, etc).

And the young guys doing the FEA's and just believing them do not have enough experience to realize when the answer is totally ridiculous.

Or as one very experienced engineer once told me (as I was presenting FE results to him), "simulation is like masturbation; the more you do it, the more you think it is the real thing". Especially if you want your CFD to be more than Crayons For Drawing...

My "paid extra to get it here Friday" RockAuto order is still bouncing around the midwest, according to the tracking. At this point they'll have visited more states than I have that are east of the Rockies and west of the Mississippi watershed.

I think @boileralum might have me taken care of, but I'll definitely let you know. Thanks a ton for the offer! And I totally understand the parental visit thing, it sucks but we've all got to do our part to keep this thing in check.

Awesome, thank you! It looks like the NA is set up differently, no banjo fitting. Though I am giving some serious consideration to replacing the NA high pressure line after this fun and excitement with the return hoses giving up on me. I can order a new Gates high pressure side hose from RockAuto for $18 and that seems like cheap insurance. JimEllis lists OE NA0232490C hose at $175... I think I'll be fine with the Gates 360100 and I'm not in a rush.

The FLAPS managed to get me a pair of 10mm ID PS hoses, I picked them up yesterday.



They aren't a perfect match, but I think there is enough here that I can make it work. They switched brands on me but it turns out these are made by Sunsong which is I believe a Chinese or Korean hose manufacturer that does a ton of OE stuff, so they should be fine. I'm going to laugh if the RockAuto ones turn out to be Sunsong hoses in Edelmann bags.

Loving the "practical engineering" chatter, you guys are awesome. If things had gone a bit differently for me I suspect I'd have ended up somewhere in an engineering field, but life doesn't always cooperate. Also my staunch mathematical agnosticism kinda gets in the way

I'm just saying, there's a very strong correlation between engineers who hate math and engineers who just click buttons and stare at pretty colors on a screen all day...

Its out in the middle of the goddamn Mojave, ~80 miles EAST of Barstow on 66 hahaha!



This is, quite literally, the whole town. I don't understand how a package gets scanned in at this location without a FedEx facility. The mind boggles. I guess at least they made it to California by Friday?

I remember driving through there back in 2010, on my way to San Diego from Utah. Just north of Sheep Hole.
