After a recent thread looking at range from one tank, I decided to see how far I could go when dailying the car. My commute is about a 25 mile round trip and I often do a few errands here and there during the week. Ended up getting 288 miles when I pulled into my garage last night with the needle just at or under E after a trip to Boston. I'm curious how much I'll be able to fill up at this point. I'm guessing that it's going to be in the realm of 11-11.5 gallons, so 1 gallon left in the tank.

As an aside, car was acting funny last night and wasn't really making full boost. Intermittently it would work totally fine. I don't think that the issue is a boost leak right now in the traditional sense. Any advice on how to troubleshoot the BOV? That's what I'm leaning towards because I didn't really hear it let off at all. I got the full 12lbs a few times, but most of the time it would see like 3-5 lbs and it was struggling to do that. I don't think it's the wastegate. I'll try taking apart the BOV and seeing if there's an issue. I need a better BOV anyway...

Subaru is working well now, so I think it's time to spend a bit of time on the miata to catch up on some maintenance and troubleshoot a few things.

Don't you get like 200 miles just from the idling in traffic to/from Boston?

Haha it's usually not that bad! I don't go there for work, just to visit my gf and friends, so it's not during peak traffic times.

In any event, I usually freak out and fill it up just under a quarter tank which is about 230-240. Looks like I could get 300 with normal driving. My commute is super early right now, but I definitely didn't temper my right foot for this 'test' so I never really tried to stay out of boost. Let's see what it takes to fill back up.

I was really nervous about this showing up so I didn't want to say anything about it till I got it in my hands. Package was apparently thrown around a ton by USPS because the box was open and I was nervous stuff would be missing but everything is here.

I'm stoked!

So there's that. Still super on the fence about pistons because of the machine costs involved for the bore etc... but I'm getting in touch with a machine shop shortly just to get an estimate. Otherwise staying under 300 is fine by me! Longer term goals may involve getting a billet wheel for this turbo and seeing what I can do with it. Should probably make things good for about 280 I would hope.

Do EWG springs tend to have a shelf life? Does said shelf life shorten with an EBC? I'm pretty certain that my EWG has something going on and is stuck open because of it. I'm going to try to see what's going on tomorrow or friday.

doubt it and doubt it

sonofthehill 10-25-2017 11:55 PM

Yes, like a couple human lifetimes, so basically, no. And no.

ridethecliche 10-26-2017 06:31 AM

Hmm. Thanks guys. The other thing I've read implicates a gasket in the ewg setup, but looks like that would cause issues from the start.

Back to square one. I guess I'll try taking it apart all the same to see if I can find anything if it keeps happening.

Steve Dallas 10-26-2017 08:39 AM

You've had nothing but trouble with your current setup, so the logical thing to do is shoot for 300 now?

sonofthehill 10-26-2017 11:17 AM

I mean, we're talking 300 miles to a tank right? I haven't actually seen any real dynos or trap speeds for this build.

I thought the answer was always allofit?

On a serious note, I'm not planning on doing anything to the turbo or boost for a while. Engine build is mostly for longevity. I'm planning on grabbing NB2 lights and a bumper over the winter as well, so I'll be redoing all the intercooler piping. The BOV will be replaced as well as it's an old stock sized unit.

This has all been a pretty good learning experience so I hope that will help guide things. This is my first foray into working on cars so I expected some silly stuff to happen along the way. If anything, I've given a too honest account of things that went wrong, but I wanted to document just about all of it.

Car took 10.1 gallons before the click and I topped off to 11.5. So still getting about 25mpg. Not bad.

You've had nothing but trouble with your current setup, so the logical thing to do is try to sell it and make money off it after you lowballed the shit out of Thirdgen in the first place?
I think this might be more what's going on here...I should've predicted this from the start.

I'm really confused about what just happened.

sonofthehill 11-04-2017 12:58 PM

It's clearly because of the loose nut behind the wheel.

Join the club apparently.

Isn't that always true though? Said loose nut is using some free time this week to do proper boost leak testing after the last snafu wasnt resolved by swapping BOVs.

ridethecliche 11-06-2017 01:14 AM

Spent a good chunk of time playing with a boost leak tester. There were a few couplers that were loose or had moved over the course of the last while so it was a good exercise. So much soapy water everywhere.

I still have a leak though, and now I'm pretty sure that it's coming from the wastegate. I can hear and feel the air coming out around it after pumping up some air in the system. I drove the car after fixing the other leaks and it definitely made a huge difference. Instead of seeing just about no boost, I see the car get up to like 5 psi now... and struggle to do so. It can't hold boost for shit though.

I'm going to try to open it up in the morning to examine the diaphragm. I think that's going to be the issue here unfortunately. I was putting maybe 3-5psi through the system when testing for leaks when I could hear/feel the air around the wastegate so it's not like it was under a bunch of stress.

thirdgen 11-06-2017 09:55 AM

Where is this air coming from?
That's a water cooled Tial 38mm MV-S...I doubt there's a diaphram problem.

Apparently out of the EWG tube itself if I understood him correctly.
In the picture I saw, there is two little dimple looking things in the rubber along the sides. They create like 1mm^2 gaps.

ridethecliche 11-06-2017 12:53 PM

Here are the pictures that byte is referring to. I texted them to thirdgen earlier to get his opinion as well.

I am no expert on fancy water cooled EWG's but that diaphragm looks normal to me.

ridethecliche 11-07-2017 11:04 PM

Yeah... Me too. Still trouble shooting here.
