I bought a friends NB1 block and had that built up already. My motor was pulled intact a week ago. I almost wish I had just waited and built up my motor because the block was in better condition and I'm going to guess that my crank is better off as well. My friend's crank polished out fine, but had a few low points. Machinist wasn't worried about it and neither am I since it's not going to affect the bearings.
If I had to do it over again, I probably would have just waited to pull my motor and build that instead, but what's done is done and that's some stupid ocd ish acting up. I'm not sure what you mean by whole setup... because all my turbo ish is sold and I've moved over to a different setup. So my original motor is intact, however the block I'm going to run is from a different nb1 motor. That said, I do like the idea of keeping something original to the motor as part of it, so I won't stress if I can't get a buyer. I just figured it'd be easier to sell a motor whole than keeping the head and trying to sell a used block. TLDR; I'll let the interest and timing dictate the direction. If I'm close to the goal build date and I have all the parts but my motor hasn't moved, I'll just use it. |
I would have:
1. Taken what you had and rebuilt it. 2. Turbocharged it. 3. Driven it. Any 1.8 can be built to make more horsepower than the transmissions can handle so I don't understand the endless pursuit of endless pursuits. A completed good enough build is better than a perpetually incomplete perfect build. |
I simply don't understand the need for a "built motor" in this thread. OP didn't even remotely max out the turbo that was just removed, and why not? Fear of engine damage on a motor that got removed anyway? |
why do you think I keep emphasizing that he finish it?
he just wants to go in countless loops and always "almost there" lol |

he just wants to go in countless loops and always "almost there" lol I still have a bit of time before I want this to run. There's currently no motor or trans in my car, thanks to a bunch of help from bytevenom. Kinda past the looping phase now. Most everything I need is on hand right now. Pretty sure my motor just sold today so off to find a vvt head. In any event, thanks everyone for the feedback. I'll update when there's something worth updating about. Fear of engine damage on a motor that got removed anyway? The goal for this setup is to be able to hit 3x stock hp/tq for a run but I'm planning on keeping it closer to 300 for day to day duty. That said, the reason for this post is that an awesome MTer has emptied my piggy bank and I've sourced a ton of stuff from him...now including a head. |
I know the MT rec for quiet muffler is the Magnaflow 12578 and 12579, with the latter being more favorable, however does anyone have any experience with the 12249 or 12259?
The guy building my exhaust stocks 11219's, but I have a feeling that these will be too loud for my liking. I thought Lars used the 12579 for mkturbo because of the split V design, but it loos like he uses the 12578. Mostly I'm looking for something that's pretty quiet at idle and cruise and doesn't tend to drone, but has some character to it when you're on it. I wasn't a big fan of the FM 2.5 turbo exhaust. I actually thought it was too loud and drone-y. I'm leaning to trying to have the 12579 fit in there, but wondering if it's overkill. Open to input. Also, I'm guessing that these big mufflers negate the need for a resonator, yeah? I haven't seen many kits run them. |
I have the MK Turbo muffler setup and really like it. It is quiet enough for highway riding without giving me a headache (previous system wasn't) and sounds deep and powerful under acceleration. It isn't loud enough to attract law enforcement from a few blocks away if you decide to misbehave, which is a serious benefit. It also helps me to hear other things going on with the engine, etc. Would buy again.

I love my MKTURBO muffler too, it has a cat. I live in a super quiet neighborhood and sometimes consider adding a resonator, usually driving up a slight grade late at night. Miataman00 said my car sounds stock at idle.

Yeah, if Lars can get it to fit, I don't see why this guy can't manage it. I just figured I'd have him use a slightly smaller one for a bit more growl and ease of assembly, but I'm paying for it so I might as well get what I want lol.

Why don't you tell us about your new setup so we can tell you what muffler you should run? |
I ran a 14" magnaflow...it was loud. Too loud.

he wont and that's a stupid request. we do not condone retardation, even if youre paying for it. There's a reason he uses the muffler he does: everything else sounds like shit.
I have a feeling that there's going to be a thread title change soon lol.

Out of curiosity, have you heard one of the medium sized ones in a miata? I'm just curious what they sound like and couldn't find a clip anywhere. And no, I'm not looking to justify getting one lol. The small ones just sound terrible and I was wondering if there's any noticeable improvement at all. I've heard an mkturbo exhaust in person. It's great. |
