Ok time for an update. Last week I got another churbo to try out, a bit bigger than the normal turbo but much smaller than the large turbo I was running. Spool is very quick and it holds through the top end. I've been jamming to get my car ready for an autocross event today so I don't have any logs yet but I have some other cool stuff to share.

My radiator cracked Friday on my way home from work but luckily I didn't destroy my engine and limped it home after getting water at a gas station. Had to put my old radiator back in. Hopefully it's covered under warranty. I can't see the crack but it leaks water out almost as fast as you can put it in and it's at the bottom. So instead of tuning EBC I swapped rads. I capped the boost at 10psi for the autocross today.

The track here has been running a simple monthly Time Attack series which is basically just a big awesome autocross on the track for street cars only. Events are $50 and you get 5 timed runs and then fun-runs at the end. You also don't need to corner work. It looked like too much fun to ignore and I plan on doing it regularly. I haven't been on the track in several years so I was completely out of practice, but had a blast anyway. The MKTurbo performed flawlessly of course, my quick responding turbo was awesome, but my normal 195mm tires were not holding up to turbo speed and I was overdriving like crazy. I will need to get a set of something better if I want to keep doing this series for sure. The limit is 200tw DOT and 245mm.

Here's a row of turbo Miatas, the one behind my car also has a MKTurbo kit that was running great. I'll have my video up tomorrow.

All 4 of these Miatas are turbod, the 2nd blue one has a built 99 motor on E85, the one in front is some crazy build on DSM Link ECU, fat tires, and skilled driver.

Apprently this was low turnout for this little event.

I am glad to see my setups out at autox's in numbers. Slowly MKTurbo will take over the turbo miata world.

Yes, the other line of Miatas with RB on them are all stock. I did my best to convert the owners :) A lot of people have heard about the MK kit, this was the first time they saw one. A few didn't realized it's V-bands all the way back either.

Autocross video is up:

This car is fun, but a handful.

It looks and sounds good. Just remember the only 2 pieces of driving information you need to know.
1. When in doubt, throttle out.
2. Drive flat out.

So what I really need to do is get a few more setups in Colorado, then get you to all show up to the FM open house next year and show off setups.

So when those fans kick on does your car die? lol I had to make idle adjustments for the little ones on the FM setup.

Remind me what you're running for suspension?

And yeah, definitely get an RB front if you can find one. Stock front and MSM rear is a bit mismatchy so I think the behavior you're experiencing is to be expected as you suggest.
Used RB ones pop up from time to time at good prices so pounceee!

Congrats on being the fastest NA/NB of the day. Glad you're enjoying yourself!

I'm running 2 14" SPAL fans and my car dies almost every time they kick on at idle. I've tried to adjust it, but I can't get it to stop dying...

Nice, looks like a ton of fun. :)

Will the road still be open at the end of June? Wouldn't mind finding out if the Montero has enough power to actually make it to the top. :P

Love the updates man. Once I get my car rockin' again we're gonna have to meet up. Maybe in CO SPGS so we can meet up with matthewsdesigns too.

Shibby 07-13-2018 09:02 AM

Clean the inside of the manifold and valve cover before you mount them to the engine. A few engines have been damaged by blast media on MT.

I love the EP3. I've been considering getting one, but most of them are in horrible condition.

Man, you've got way more grit than I do. If I needed to do this much work, I would just sell it and get one that was already mostly done. Good job though, I'm sure the car is coming together nicely to where you wanted it.

That's because you guys in California are spoiled with clean cars. Most older cars that lived most of their lives in the mountains look this way, or much worse! You should see my car  .. No rust but definitely gritty AF.

I love the updates Jimmy, can't wait to hear your impressions on the FOX. I'm building a DIY bilstein setup for my car right now, designed around somewhat softer springs and lots of travel to cope with shitty mountain roads.

Did you use RTV to attach the TB to the IM?

I've been having some weird high idle issues since I swapped manifolds and I'm having a hard time pinpointing a leak. That was going to be my next step!

The little idle adjustment screw above the TB inlet has a drilled passage all the way to the gasket at the back. There's a machined slot it intersects that may be uncovered in some cases and bleed air. Put some RTV in the end of the slot and put the throttle body back on and it solves it.

if you're really keen on working out if the rad protector jazz will block airflow (or how much, more the case) you can just measure one of the holes and calculate the area.
Then count how many holes there are for a set area (like 10cm^2 or something)

total area - hole area = blocked area

then you can calc how much of a % that is on the total.

wrengel 02-19-2019 01:18 PM

Congrats again on your class win, Jimmy! It was a pleasure watching you drive my car and give me pointers and set-up advice, I learned so much. You are definitely on heck of a wheel-man. And no, I'm not mad you beat me in my own car...every...single....race...

Folks have really been liking the 949 clutch lately.

dleavitt 06-10-2019 04:49 PM

When my FM1 started slipping I went with the ACT XTSS. Not as light as stock (or FM1), but still easily drivable.

A friend of mine just dyno'd his Miata with a similar build at 324hp/325 ft-lbs at the wheels before he ran out of fuel and I have more fuel flow potential. I want to make a hero number on the dyno but then dial it back down around 300hp where you are dleavitt I think.

No hero pulls here, so can't comment on how well the XTSS would hold up. 300whp is plenty for me.

sixshooter 06-12-2019 07:45 PM

My XTSS held 330ish until I lost the transmission.
